Fuel Filter location 1989 AJ 270...

Going through maintenance on new (to me 1989 AJ 270). Thought I knew where the fuel/water -separator filter is, but what I have is a bell housing with retaining nut coming off the fuel tank. I was thinking the new filter goes inside the housing, but there is no way it will fit, and the housing is NOT coming off easy. Am I looking at the wrong thing and the fuel filter is somewhere closer to the engine? 1989 Mercruiser 4.3LX (205hp). I do have the manual and it shows a general location (where the bell housing is). Tried looking up references, but just keep getting sale ads, and youtubes of people maintaining newer pre-staged engines...

Have you traced tour fuel line from the carb back to the tank?

I did, and what I ended up finding is that my engine does NOT in fact have a screw on type filter/water-separator. It uses a small filter within a housing at the fuel pump.
