my fuel gauge was working fine and then somehow I left my key on for about a week or two and the gauge now pegs below empty when I turn the key on and power goes to the gauge. I am thinking maybe the sending unit needs to be replaced. has this happened to anyone before?

Teleflex (gauge division) was purchased by VeeThree Instruments.

They're very helpful, as most ex-Teleflex folks moved with the sale.

(edit) Oh, and check your wiring. Sounds like there's a break in your sending wire to make it go pegged empty, IIRC.

You may have killed the sending unit, the varitable resistor. May have to pull it out and check with a VOM to make sure if it works or not, if all else fails.
