I just had an experience where my fuel pump crapped out and my mechanic is saying that the fuel pump going bad caused the water pump to leak. Is this possible/likely??
If you have a mechanical fuel pump driven by a cam in the water pump, the is yes. Gas could leak into the water pump and damage the pumps bearings and gaskets. I had such a problem on my 1997 330 DA with twin 4.7 LS. I replaced both damaged pumps, then replaced the other fuel pump (still ok), then purchased spares of each.
