The Furuno Radar decided to not work right this year. The radar only picks up 0-10% of what is out there. The Tuning indicator bar in the top right of the screen (which is supposed to read 50-80%) reads between 10-25% at best.

If you crank the gain all the way up, small dots will appear randomly on the radar screen.

Everything else seems to work. Low hours (700/800) but its eight years old.

Any ideas? Anyone have a similar issue? Do Radars loose their tuning after a while and need to be re-calibrated? Or does it sound more like a mechanical or magnatron failure?

ooo yea i remember your dogs at the ding dock. i helped lift one one eve. very cool.. open aray.....i would start by checking all connections to and from the aray. also check the fuse in line if you have one and down under the console. the connections there have been week for me at times.replace the fuse for the hell of it(cheep) may not look bad but if its partialy fried the unit may not be getting the power it needs. scroll through the menues and see if theres a diagnostiac test.(not sure but i think i remember something there). if nothing works then try a factory reset.(resets everything to out of box settings) if that dont work then im not sure but ill keep thinkin bout it. c ya soon mike....oooo i was wondering..the v10 mans....what do they burn at cruisung speed? i burn just under 70 gph at around 27 knots.

Not to hijack... But my Gawd! 70 gph...
That's my entire budget for the FULL weekend and that's $300 in gasoline!

WOW!

There are typically three to four adjustments you can make to a RADAR unit. Tuning, Gain, Pulse width and repetition rate. The last two may have different names, such as Fast Time Constant, etc. Most modern (last decade or so) RADAR units operate these modes automatically. Sounds like your tuning is set to manual. Check the manual for how to adjust or set to automatic.

Best regards,
Frank

If the targets being displayed are the ones close-in, and it's not reading the further-out targets it's likely the mag. As stated already,be sure the tuning is set to "auto".

Furuno's tech support is second to none. When you're on the boat (where you can perform some troubleshooting steps) call Furuno in Camas, Wa. (360) 834-9300.

Thanks for all the sugestions everyone. I'll double check the connections and fuses, then try a reset. If still no luck going to look into replacing the magnatron (or however you spell it).

Thanks my girl dog's back legs give her trouble from time to time, can only imagine what that is going to $$$ down the road...

My MAN diesels are several sets before they had the GPH readouts...so I am not exactly sure.

But I've been estimating such:

24 knots about 45-50/gal hr
27 knots about 60-65/gal hr
30 knots about 75-80/gal hr

She'll burn all the way up to 112/gal hour according to MAN diesel specs if you go faster.
