Particulars:
1985 Merc 260/MR Transom, Alpha One.
San Juan MC304 FWC.
Have the boat in the driveway this weekend doing the annual stuff. While running on the muffs I notice that cooling water is exiting only through the prop hub and the starboard opening in the transom. Check the elbows - starboard is cool, port is considerably warmer but not too hot to touch. This is after about 5 minutes idling.
On this system, the block, heads and manifolds are FWC, the elbows are "cooled" via the raw water exit from the heat exchanger. I pull the hose to each riser and clamp on the garden hose - both sides flow well and have no noticeable back pressure, at least as far as I can tell from this simple test.
The peculiar thing is the tee fitting on the raw water exit hose that splits the flow to the elbows - it's more like a "y" with the raw water hose connected to the upper left of the y, port elbow to upper right, starboard to the 'tail". The factory diagram shows this to be correct, see attached .jpg.
Interestingly, if I lift and turn and reposition the tee - I can get water to flow through the port elbow. Returning the fitting to it's natural resting place results in starboard flow only.
Comments & suggestions? Design flaw? I'm considering changing to a more traditional "tee" fitting. Should I even be concerned?
Risers are 3 years old, fresh water only.
Thanks in advance -
Brian
