I have a 1989 Quicksilver 8KW Gas generator the engine is a Nissan Micra engine. It has 1,200 hours on it. It works well. Does anyone know when
I should change the timing belt,if so at how many hours.

Thanks Mike
Went on net and watch video of them being changed. Said to replace tensioner, water pump and engine seals you can get at. Has any one done this? If yes have you seen a video of it. Video I saw was for VW. Can not seem to find drawing of set up on my generator on net. I have lots of room at front and starboard side of engine. On manifoid side I got 8".
Anyone have any idea what a mechanic should charge for the work?

They wanted $300 labor and that was 6 or so years ago. I did it for the cost of the belt. I did the raw water pump while I was in there.

Merry christmas

I have a westerbeke 7.0 generator and they say to change it every 1000 hrs. When I got the boat it had 1400 hrs and I had no idea if the previous owner did it at a 1000 hrs, so I changed mine. I had to do some research on finding the belt because westerbeke had decided to discontinue the belt. Like Mike said change it because those type of engines are what they call "interference engines" If the belt breaks the timing between your crank and camshaft will be off and then your valves will slapping the top surface of your pistons. When I changed mine the most critical thing was to make sure the gears mesh up. I had little arrows on my gears that had to be aligned for proper sync.

The car version is 5 yrs 60k miles
if I recall and figure correctly that would equate to about 1000 hrs
when in doubt change it out

Thank you all for help. I was sent the information required to change it by a member on this site. Will change it in the spring.

Never read the section on changing the timing belt. Is it helpful?

Great manual you supplied it has pictures and lists all the parts I need. Looks like I can get the belt and all the related parts on the net. Have relative that spends winter in Arizona and I will have it shipped to him. If I ship it to Canada the courier and the fees they charge about double the price.
Definatly will document the work with pictures and post on the site.
Thanks again for the manuals

That's great. Glad they were helpful. I never got to it - my gen had about 280 hours on it. I don't know if it was every done by the previous owner but it's all a moot point now for me. Looking forward to your tutorial. Still think the QS gens feature the best motors - shame that Merc washed their hands of them.

I ordered timing belt, water pump, and all the ignition parts including coil and spark plug wires that ROCKAUTO had. Got 2 of each as they list the number they have and they only had 3 complete belt kits left. ROCKAUTO is a US company but all the parts are from UK. So I assume they are going to be hard to get some day. Shipping was $110 Mesa AZ.
Hope they fit.
