Good deal ??

Depends on the type of body of water you are running in. If your in a lake probably ok. Ocean, must be a Type I.

Look at the coast guard website. It will explain I, II, III.

If your running in an area where help is considered close by, then Type II works.

Class III also in this type of vest does not show up very well.
On a boat your size, I would guess you need at least a Type II.

Hope that helps a little.

THANKS VERY MUCH

"To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person aboard. Boats 16 feet and over must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well."

Nothing was ever mentioned to me about ocean or inland waterway life jackets, even when the auxiliarymen are crawling all over my boat during the annual courtesy inspection. They do want to see that your PFDs are readily accessible and not buried in the bilge or under a bunk.

Regarding children...
"PFD Wear Requirements for Children by State:

Effective December 23, 2002, in states where no children’s life jacket law is in place, a U.S. Coast Guard interim rule will require children under 13 on moving boats to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits. Fifteen states will be affected by the rule.

This rule does not change or supercede the existing law in states which have life jacket laws, it only applies to states which had no laws. Please see the list below for the latest laws in your state.

Please note that these laws provide boaters with the minimum age that a child is required to wear a life jacket. It is still a parent’s responsibility to decide if a child should wear a life jacket, even in situations where the law does not require it"

 Thanks.....i think ill get that set of four vests at west marine...

Although some may only be guidlines, if you read up on the subject of life jackets and how they perform, you won't want to be in the ocean with Type III, maybe Type II, but Type I is the best for keeping a person a float face up in rough waters.

West Marine has a pretty good section on the life jackets to and what they are designed to do.

Personnally, I want the best in case of the worst.

Sorry if I led anyone to it was a requirement for Type I, not the expert here, just know what I read about them thanks to the coast guard.

Would this be a good post to discuss how buying cheap-ass PFD's for people on board that are stored in a cheap-ass bag just to meat some BS Coast Guard minimal requirement is probably not a great thing?

Good grief...

Ya know... all you need to carry for a distress signal regardless of where you boat (offshore, lake, etc) is a simple distress flag:

No flares required per the Coast Guard... you can be 20 miles off shore and just have that flag as your only distress signal and still be legal... And you can get them at K-Mart for 4 bucks:

(Note it is called an "Airhead" distress flag at K-Mart... Even K-Mart knows people are airheads if they think minimal CG requirements will save them)

Don't waste your money on flares and life jackets! You'll never use them!!! 4 bucks and you are set!!!

So... back to the original question... Are cheap-ass jackets in a cheap-ass case good enough for guests? Depends on who the guests are... so "maybe"....

Here's how I treat guests and family:

If you are on the boat, you have one on your neck.... good quality too!

Just pick up a couple of these and you'll be OK. They worked just fine on the Titanic.

Ah yes, go away for a couple of hours only to return and find CSR back to normal. Life is good!

I'm thinking that a couple of those floating pool noodles could be used as the "throwable pfd" thing... so add $1.34 to my "budget pfd/rescue package"
