Hey everyone.. Well July 5th going up to Greenport again and staying till Monday. This time going to try to go though Shinnecock Canal. Then mostly stay at Greenport with a day at Sag and anther day at Shelter Island (Salt) just for lunch.. We loved that spot last year.. So my questions are anything I have to worry about going though Shinnecock Canal and locks,Great Peconic Bay all the way up to Greenport? And we fig to stop for lunch somewhere on Shinnecock canal any good places to eat??? We love Sea food. And Friday we are going to Sag for the day... Any must haves to def eat or stop at in Sag Harbor?

And again Thanks everyone for the info....

Assuming you're coming in the Shinnecock Inlet. Be carefull between R22 and R24. The only thing in the canal to be prepared for is they tend to leave the locks open to long and that creates a hazardous condition with ripping water. If you happen to be navigating through during this time, power up as much as you need to get yourself safely through the Lock. All bets are off regarding a wake, maintain control of your vessel. After you clear the Lock , then you can slow down.
After you pass the Lock, on your left (west) side is the canal cafe at Hampton Watercraft Marine. Great spot for lunch.
Sag Harbor has plenty of great spots for lunch on Main Street. Dockside Bar & Grill is one. It's a short walk east of Main Street on Bay Street.

I agree, canal Cafe is a great spot, however on the south side of the locks is a restaurant called Cowfish. You can dock your boat on the floater there if there is space. They also have a sister restaurant called Rumba which is my Fav. They have a water shuttle to take there by boat as you can't dock there unless an outboard CC.
Salt is just OK. Best to go to Sag Harbor and grab a mooring or a town dock. They have a launch service if you don't have a dink. then eat at the dockside fish market or Sen Sushi on Main Street. Breakfast in Sag, Golden Pear....
When you come in the Shinnecock inlet use the channel to starboard side, there are local buoys that will route you east around the shoaling. it will bring you very close to shore but if you stay in channel there is more water on this side. best to study those marker before hand.

Hope you have a safe trip. Just FYI , my brother -in -law who lives in Greenport was just down last week for a visit and told me Claudio's recently was sold. New owners raised prices through the roof for food and drink. I'm assuming you're staying at Greenport Town dock, nice dockage. Another good place to stop for lunch on your way in in the Peconic Bay is "Legends Sports Bar/ Restaurant" in Mattituck. They recently re-did their bulkhead and docks but haven't been there since so I can't opine on them. Maybe someone with local knowledge can chime in. . I'll be in Greenport in August. Safe sailing :)

Was just looking at the charts I see what u guys are talking about taking the starboard channel. But on my charts (Navionics & Gamin) There not showing up the local markers. I do see the water depths though. And then i assume theres no prob running in the Shinnecock bay all the way up to when the channel meets again wide open? We think we are gonna stop at cow fish, that place looks good... I also wanna top off the tanks somewhere over here with Gas. Can't wait till the next boat.... Diesel all the way.....

And sry never been though a lock... Coming from the ocean side i run up though the east side of the lock.. So passing that wall on my port? And you say power up if its open, Its deep water in there? Made a little pic.

yes they don't show on chart but they are there and well marked. You will head east as soon as you enter Tiana bay, its marked, then a port turn to the north for about 1/2 mile then opens up and you follow buoys it will turn back west so you can enter the canal where cow fish is. Enjoy Cow Fish. Call ahead I think they may have other spots to put you in as there is another bulk head not he north Side of the restaurant.

Correct on your question. During the time the Lock is open, traffic coming from the Peconic will transit thru that narrow opening. Another precaution, make sure you maintain a speed faster than the current to maintain control. Otherwise you can get sideways real quick. You can call the Lock and find out what time the Lock remains open (631) 852-8299.
I prefer Rumba over Cow Fish but that's just personal taste. Rumba has a great Rum Punch and all of the food has a Carribean Flare.

So Ty again for all the Info... Went the ocean Rt and only took us 4 1/2 hrs start to Finish. Tried stopping for lunch at Cow Fish but there were no spots so we Locked Through, not so bad and then stopped at Canal Cafe.. (Great Lobster Roll, Bread was amazing)

Then tried going to Salt at Shelter Island a few days later, Again no spots. So Ran over to Sag. Ken for the local morrings was very Helpful. 1.50 a ft tie to a morning and Shuttle us in and back to the boat with a very nice Tinder. Great guy Def use him again..

Coming back ran the ocean Rt again, Locks were open this time... WOW what a current and tight squeeze going though the locks. But just power up a little and not so bad... Can't wait till next year... Going to do Sag and somewhere in Mountak next time.. Thanks again for everyones help.... Gonna try to upload some pics
