New to cruiser style boating and head systems....

The cockpit area gets a strong and foul odor when the head system switch is activated. Typically leave it off unless someone needs to use the head but once it’s turned on, the smell immediately returns.

thoughts?

You should have an in line filter ( in the vent line from the tank ). This is probably where your odor is coming from. Check to see if you do. Every time you flush it forces stale air out of the tank through this vent. The filter (charcoal) eliminates that odor. It is usually white and about 14-18 inches long, 3-4 inches in diameter and usually has a regular garden hose type ends. Most change these every 1-2 years. If they get wet (from overflowing holding tank) they are ruined. You can buy a replacement for $50 - $80 bucks. Many of us refill them for penny's. There are several threads on here as well as You Tube videos you can check out. Google RV / Boat holding tank filter and how to recharge your holding tank filter. It is simple. Copy n paste link below.

I removed mine, cut it in half and replaced the charcoal on the inside.
This is where mine is located on my boat. I had to use electrical adapters because they were out of plumbing ones.
They work the same though.
I used a female adapter, and a male adapter.

+1 on the recharge of the FART filter!
Also added another length of hose to raise the filter higher to lessen the chance of getting wet.
