Hello all!

I need your help, I´m going to buy a Sea Ray 270 Sundancer 1999-2001, wide body with single engine and B3. I have read about the " rotten balsa hull" and I don´t like it.

Question: Is this a common problem for the 270 SE aswell???

Really happy with any answer as I´m living in Sweden and are planning to import a boat from the US.

Best regards, The Swede

If you are referring to the story on the home page about the 460 dancer I believe that is very rare, however anything is possible. I had a 290 Sundancer that I kept in brackish Florida saltwater year round. I had the hull cleaned every month and pulled the boat out once a year for inspection. I believe routine maintenance is very important. Florida is loaded with Sea Rays and friendly Sea Ray owners. I dont remeber anyone complaining of rotten hulls. The 270 Sundancer has been a very popular model. Prior to purchasing get an independent survey done for your protection. Happy boating!

Many thanks for your answer, that was good to hear.

Happy boating to you aswell,

Best regards,

The Swede

+1 on getting a marine inspection before importing any boat.

Rot can be caused by improper drilling through the fiberglass to add a fitting to the boat. It also happens if a fitting is damaged and not repaired before water enters.

I found hull and transom rot on some relatively new boats when I was shopping for one. None of the problem boats were Sea Rays.

Try to limit your search to freshwater used boats. Stay away from saltwater if possible. Go to boatrader.com put in the Chicago zip code 60601 and limit your search to 500 miles. This will limit you to freshwater northern boats.

Hey Swede,

the title of the thread says 270 SE but you are looking for a wide-body Sundancer correct? The 270 SE DA is the narrow "special edition" of the 270, hope this helps narrow your search.

I think he hails from Sweeden? That's gonna make the Chicago zip next to useless. Unless he wants a rather large transport fee.

Thanks for the geography lesson. The majority of used American branded boats purchased in Scandinavian countries are imported from the U.S. Even with transport fees it's cheaper than purchasing in the EU.

Hello All!

Thx for your answers, great tip with the "north search" and freshwater.

I´m going to buy a 270 Sundancer, wide body with B3, whats the right search name for that?

To export a boat from US costs around 9.000$ to port Gothenburg, Sweden, so even with the export costs it´s a great deal for me.

Have great weekend all,

The Swede

Just make sure you search for 270 Sundancer and that it does NOT say "SE" or "Special Edition", these are the narrower version. Make sure you use a surveyer to check everthing out!

Hello Swede, I just did a search on boattrader.com. Go to advanced search, put in Sea Ray, 270 Sundancer, 1999-2001. I came up with 12 boats priced from 32,900 to 49,900. I believe the one for 32,900 is the SE, the one you don't want. You can always correspond with the seller to get the specifications and check the Sea Ray web site in the archived models to verify everything. You could also get in touch with a Sea Ray dealer and have him do a search for you. I've dealt with B & E marine in Michigan City Indiana, and Skipper Bud's in Holland Michigan. Both were honest and gave me a fair price. I've also purchased from MarineMax which is the largest Sea Ray dealer in the world. They used to be the highest priced, however I think this economy has brought them back down to earth. Check out there store in Minneapolis Minnesota. They're freshwater and priced lower due to less demand in that area. Keep us posted!

Perfect, really greatful for your help. I´ll let all know when the deal i closed.

Best regards The Swede
