I believe the consensus is that the way hours are recorded depends on engine type (gas / diesel), type of ignition, ECM/ non ECM smartcraft non smartcraft etc. I supposed the easiest way to do it would be to turn ignition on, look at hour meter, leave switch on for a measured amount of time and look at the meter again.

can someone pls confirm the comment about the engine hours meter working even when the engines are running (i.e. key in on postion and rocker swithces on)?

A standard hour meter is powered from the "on" position of the ignition key switch.

Thanks for all the inf. I was wondering when there is a point when buying you consider it a repower.
