I was crawling aroung the engine bilge today and saw a filter on the holding tank. It said it should be changed every year to avoid odor. Anybody familiar with this? Any advice on how often to change? And how to change and stay clean?

To keep it clean, avoid allowing your holding tank to get overfull-the sewage will contaminate the filter.

I've owned my 420DA for three years. I have changed the filter once. They are pricey-around 80 bucks. If you search this site, our token Regal Owner, kenpcfl, posted the step by step process to recharge the old filter. I used Ken's technique on my old filter, and will swap it out and recharge the new one when I need to.
The recharge simply requires activated charcoal pellets from any pet store (used in fish tank filters) and some PVC male and female connectors from Home Depot or Lowes.

Search the site-I am sure you will find Ken's post.

I change the filter every other year. On the other hand we don't use the heads other than when we are traveling. The filter is an air (oder) filter and you will not get dirty changing it. On my boat changing it is easy just loosen the clamps and slip the new filter in. They are not cheap.

Do not let your holding tank overflow and your filter should last a few years. We might be on our 4th or so season with the present one and still no problems. The problem is when the charcoal pellets inside the filter get wet. This destroys their natural ability to filter the noxious air venting from the holding tank.
