Boating related: I forgot to cash a check from the guy who bought my airplane in '07 when I was looking to buy a bigger Sea Ray.

Anyway, how long is a check valid? This one is dated April, 2007 for $100. Even if it is valid, would it be poor form to run it? Should I let him know first?

I always heard it was good for ever unless it had something written on it like expires in 180 days, etc.

I agree it would be poor form for you to cash it, just send it to me after you have endorsed. (Grin)

I would think giving him a heads up would be a nice gesture. Im sure if he balances his checking account he has already written it off, and may not be accounting for it. I dont think he could afford an airplane if he didn't have an extra $100 in his checking account, but it would still probably prevent any issues and guarantee youd get the money (especially if you call him, then it turns out to be expired, he may even cut you a new check)

Let him know that you forgot to cash the check. The check do expired 6 months from the date the check was written.

I used to work for Regions Bank for 2 years.

Google stale check..

"A check is considered to be stale when it is outstanding for a period of six months or more. A bank is not obligated to pay a stale check."

For some reason, 6 months sticks in my head too. I have no idea if that is the truth, but that is what I was thinking before I read the response.

Oh and edit: Yes, call him and let him know. Im sure $100 wouldnt put anyone in arrears, but it would be the right thing to do. That checking account may not be valid anymore, making this actually an expense for you with a bank fee.

Thanks, all. No, didn't sell a plane for $100--It was to clean up one of the expenses.

This guy still asks about going for a boat ride, so I'm going to let him know that I found the check, will shred it, and he can take it from there...

No, because you said Regions. They just screwed up a wire for me twice, and I just got hit with a $25 fee from my bank to cover their wire. Sorry :)

If it's any consolation, I hate Regions, I resigned because their management sucked horribly.
