How will boats be powered when ICEs go away?

Let's not ignore the COST - which will be the biggest factor.

The initial capital cost to purchase that technology - whatever it is, coupled with ongoing operation and maintenance costs.

Unlikely we'll be seeing anything like this in our world of midsized recreational boats in our lifetimes.

That TOTAL COST will simply not make sense in these applications, at least not during our lifetimes.

For some time now my mantra has been:

I am so damned lucky to have been born WHERE and WHEN I was.

Got to experience the highest standard of living in all of recorded human history.

Sadly, I don't expect this to continue for the generations that follow.

Never imagined we'd be in this state of affairs today

a 65 year old white male is now a TARGET

Never thought I'd have to carry to feel safe when getting gas in a big city.

I won't go political, that's not what this thread is about

So for me, for now, I'll selfishly spend my remaining time messing with my diesel powered boat, traveling the coasts with a bucket list of new destinations & my straight flathead eight cylinder Studebaker President with a road draft tube and no PCV valve, my supercharged Studebaker Avanti, both with carburetors and no catalytic converters of captured fuel vapor systems, and live out my days in this little, safe, Florida gulf coast town, enjoying everything there is to enjoy and hiding from the sadness and reality of what's become of the real world.

Yeah, born in the right time and the right place. Diesel and gasoline will remain viable and available for the rest of my lifetime, as will fossil fuels.

Unlikely our generation will ever see a fully loaded airplane take off with battery power, fusion or any other alternative energy source.

BEST !

This is perfectly stated. You and I agree.

I don't believe for a second that eliminating internal combustion engines has anything to do with Climate Whatever. The guy (founder of the Justice Democrats) who came up with the Green New Deal for AOC explained it as a: "way to redistribute the wealth of America".

His supposition was simple: wrap what you want to achieve into something that people care about and they will do all the heavy lifting for you without challenging your basic idea. In fact your "believers" will also demonize anyone who challenges the science behind your idea and cancel them for you.

To what end? The answer is simple. If you want to redistribute the wealth of the county, the government needs to create a reason to put in place mandates and raise taxes. Take notice that most great ideas actually reduce costs and improve life. Not the case with Climate Whatever. It will cost you more money and you will need to stop doing things you enjoy to pay for it. When that happens, the government is free to redistribute their "new" revenue to anyone they deem worthy.

I'm waiting for the government attack on ICE boaters. It has been brewing for some time and if they can make the case for 5 Right Whales killed in 15 years as the justification for a 10 knot off shore speed limit on the East Coast......they can ban the sale of ICE boats by 2035.

It's something like - 17 cents per gallon gasoline and 23 cents per gallon diesel goes to the Fed for transportation infrastructure maintenance and development. If these fuels are eliminated or even reduced, then where will that funding/tax come from. Ponder that for awhile.

In my state I pay an EV tax each year. I suspect that will happen at a federal level at some point. IF EVs ever proliferate through the market. We are assuming they will at this point, but there are still a number of manufacturers fighting them in the background. Toyota being one. Do you try to recoup the fuel taxes from your marine use?

Marine fuel is Off Road (red) fuel. The only tax is Fl Sales Tax around here. However, the Fed still gets their take other ways.
You totally missed my point though.
Many states raise their registration fees on EV's to supplement the revenue loss on automobiles but I'm poking at the Fed revenue loss. There is a push to federalize the electrical power infrastructure behind the scenes. The cost of electricity will become the point of revenue IMO.

I got your point. I said that I expect a federal EV tax at some point. Taxing electricity will be difficult to do. Unless you just do some average per person . But this will also lead to more rules against solar panels. That will get ugly. Taxing the EV just seems like the more reasonable approach.

All of my local marinas charge a state highway use tax on their fuel. There’s one about 60 miles from me that does not. And come to think of it. Maybe they only do this on gas. I don’t purchase diesel from them so I don’t see those receipts. I save my receipts and my tax acctant gets those dollars back for me.

I'm thinking that rather than banning boats they'll start with rules against the unnecessary burning of fossil fuels. This would include automobiles, mileage will be rationed, excess will be punished.

DOT is already on this. Pete Butthead has already said the US fossil fuel taxes need to be replaced with self reporting based on miles and/or time of use. Many States have implemented a flat rate EV tax as a way to offset fossil tax loss. Pete's approach is for the car to do all the reporting.

I already have yearly inspections in my state, even for an EV. Might as well have the state report it.
