we generally have less than a foot of tidal swing in our marina but with nor-easters (and named storms) we tend to get 3-5 foot surges. anyone on the bay make any special preparations for our gal Hannah? or did you do what most folks did - go down to the boat, stare at it, then turn around and go home.

(i tightened springs, took the enclosure down and put one extra line on).

I am on a Lagoon. Most of my prep will be house, rather than boat, related. I will put up an extra fender or two. I will reevaluate as the winds pick up. Easterly winds shouldn't be too hard on my moorings. I will be taking in the Garden Furniture and the Jetskis in the morning. I plan on having the boat fridge cooled down in advance as a multi-hour power outage at the house is downright likely.

Both boats are pretty well secured in general, so I won't be worried. If the weather isn't too knarly early on, I will take the SeaRay out for a spin in the morning. (wishful thinking probably).

The biggest problem for me will be flooding. I don't expect high tide to affect the boats. but the house may be a different issue. My car will be parked on a hill where flooded lagoons won't reach.

Oh yeah. . .I will take a camera to grab some pics. Someone put a no-wake sign on the lawn when the street's low point went 2' under.

I'm not chancing anything, nor the swim platform again. I added four lines, a fender, and am going to stay aboard to make sure there's not the slightest scratch.

I readjusted all lines today and then doubled them. Added extra fenders. Why not? I have them. Then, if I get lucky and she's a total loss, I can say to the insurance company, "See, I tried and did the right things. Pay me!" But I doubt I'll be so lucky.

Can you tell we went to the Atlantic City In-Water Boat Show today?

Best regards,
Frank

I did the following:
- checked all 6 lines (I always have 7 on: 3-stern, 2-bow, 2-springs) and made sure there's enough room for extra high tide.
- put fenders on each side (port/strbrd)
- made sure the canvas is tight and all is zipped up.
- secured everything by the dock, turned the table upside down and tied banches/chairs to the table.
- stored all smaller items in the dockbox.

Alex.

I doubled the lines, pulled in my whips and put up my fender boards......

I'll be around all day and night to make adjustments if necessary.

Now, if I have a loss, my prep is documented.....Hmmmm a new (used) 52DA...

That Basil looks pretty bad....I should just dump that too....

I doubled all my lines, used my fender board on the port side to protect against piliing and added two extra fenders on the starboard side against the finger pier. I also removed my windshield cover.

i guess all the extra lines, fenders and boards make little difference if the surge takes the boat higher than the pilings. this is what i worry about. probably the BEST place to be is on or walking distance to the boat so things can be adjusted as needed. high tide at manasquan on sat is 12:37a and 1:03P and on sun 1:27a and 1:51P. hi-tide at high bar on sat is 1:53a and 2:19p and sun 2:43a and 3:07p. it's the tides in the afternoon on saturday that are going to be the problem. the web site i use pull up uses the same tide tables for barnegat and manasquan inlets (??), which is why i use the high bar tides. (is that typical?)

Hmmm. Got up to do my prep. . .and we have totally still air. Hmmmm.

As for tides. . I am sure today will be fine. It is Tomorrow Afternoons tide that will peak out in my area.

Ron:

That's what the fenders boards are (mainly) for. They effectively raise the height of the pillings. If we ever get a surge that puts the water over the top of the pilings, then we have real troubles,,,,:wow:. Even the infamous Decemeber 1992 storm didn't come over the bulkhead....let alone the top of the pillings.

The water 'will' raise enough to put the rub rail over the pillings....and the boards are the 'perfect' solution to that issue.

Storm turned out to be a dud here in NJ.....very little wind or rain. The water is a little higher than normal, but right now, the canal behind my house is as calm as a bathtub. If it weren't for all the extra lines and fender boards that I'd have to remove, I'd go out for night ride. Even the basil didn't blow over!!!

Oh well...it was good practice.....I guess!!!

dom, that's good to hear. i figured as much since here at the house it was nothing more than a typical rainy blustery saturday. we'll be down tomorrow for a sunny boat day!

Current forcast: winds 35-40 Gusts to 55.

Current wind: Zero.

Definately *not enough* to take the sailboat out. :)

We received a lot of rain yesterday and last night. Not much wind, but enough to bring down some small branches here and there. Not a big deal.

Best regards,
Frank

OK, what did I miss here??
