I'm in the process of purchasing a 1989 340 EC. It has rattle noise in the port tranny near the bellhousing. I'm gonna do a complete tune, including the carbs overhauled. I'm hoping this takes care of it, BUT, if it does'nt where can I get a drive plate/ Damper? I read somewhere about a new design without springs. Has anyone heard of this? I believe it's a rubber damper.

I am told that the noise is "normal" provided it goes away when the transmission is shifted into gear. Either the motor or the transmission have to be pulled to change a damper plate, so it is an expensive proposition to make the noise go away. I live with it on my boat.

I replaced mine. The new one was from Merc. around 300 bucks and had rubber shocks, not springs. In gear the noise should go away with rubber or springs. Replace only if the trans is already out of the boat.
Mark.

you don't happen to remember where you got the rubber version do you? I need to tune the motor first and make sure all is running well before I remove the trans.

Right from my merc parts guy. He said they no longer stocked the spring type.
I really only changed it because, I was in ther anyway.
I do see the spring one for sale elsewhere for around 100 dollars or so.
These parts are normally only changed out with an overhaul. Tune up first.
Good luck,
Mark.
