I can't believe I'm back here, instead of watching the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Most yrs I watch at least the opening ceremony and certain games/events.

I kind of like 'em being in Canada this yr - but half of my family is from up North. And, I'm only 30 miles from the border. So, it's easy for me to recognize(and somewhat relate to) some of the stuff in the opening ceremony tonight.

Something to smile about from North of the border, eh?!

BUT THEY SUCK!

Holy crap, save me! SAVE ME!

Any Canadians here? Sorry my good friends and neighbors, but really...

I'm Canadian as you know and I'm here because IT DOES SUCK!!

About the only good thing I can think about regarding the Olympics is the public thrashing that Obama, Daley and the city of Chicago got this past summer. That was a thing of beauty.
Don't forget Oprah too!!!! That was a thing of beauty with all 4 of them slammed!:smt038:grin::thumbsup:

On behalf of my countrymen...(and women)

I'm sorry!
I'm sorry!
I'm sorry!

I survived the entire show (well except for the brief nap in the middle) only to be left with the following sentiment: "Oh my God, those are three hours I wished I could reclaim!"

I hung on for the end and the lighting of the cauldron because one of the prevalent rumours was that the cauldron was going to be lit as Wayne Gretzky handed off the flame to Betty Fox who would hand off to a holographic image of her son Terry Fox (Canadian legend...google if you don't know who he is) who would light the cauldron. That could have been done given the number of projected images in the show and would have been uber-cool. Oh well...

I'm sorry!

Hopefully the next 16 days will recover...

And to my American friends...I won't be extending my apologies after the Gold Medal hockey...:smt043

Well I guess when you only 1/10 of the budget of the China Olympic budget then how can you compare.

First the opening video was fantastic I want to go visit now, it is simply beautiful. The native people was well too drawn out. The Orca's and special effects were outstanding...

But I am so sorry that all I could think of was the two dudes in that youtube posting up there... Eh! Hoser!!! and Molsen...

Bob and Doug Mackenzie...a Canadian classic. Maybe we should have gotten them to light the Cauldron!

We have Canadian Content rules (Cancon) for local TV broadcasts. The "Great White North" was a part of a show (Second City Comedy) running in the early 80's (I think) and was done as a dig at Cancon. Funny!

Terry Fox is clearly one of our greatest national heros.

They missed a real moment opportunity and what could have been an emotional defining moment as Betty handed off to Terry. Especially given that Terry grew up in Port Coquitlam, just outside of Vancouver.

Oh well. I guess it's easy to sit here and be an arm chair quarterback.

Terry's mother, Betty was one of the flag bearers who brought the Olympic flag into the stadium.

Hey Wayne!

It's all good, my friend!

I agree- the visual imagery was breathtaking. Beautiful country...

I actually learned quite a bit too, including the fact that 90% of the country's population lives within 100 miles of the border (at least, that's what they said).

Is that because it's just too frickin' cold to be any further north?

What I found saddest was on the NBC broadcast. Every time a new country came in to the stadium, NBC's little globe graphic started off showing where the USA was, and then moved to the country entering the stadium. Up here, the CBC just showed the location of the new country - they didn't feel it was necessary to repeatedly show where Canada was on the globe.

Really? Are there no geography classes in your public schools?

That being said, the cauldron ceremony was embarrasing for the organizers...

1. It was awful.
2. I don't think you can take personal responsibility for the depth and breadth of the production values.
3. If I accept your apology, then I owe you one back for Atlanta in '96.

The Chinese must be yawning and laughing at the same time.
I was happy to see the loud applause the Americans got.
I loved the Orca and ice break segments.
The torch lighting was sad and difficult to watch. Who's head will roll for that?
What business do the Iranians have there?
I did not realize that the Russian population is only 140 million. They must be crapping their pants living next to China and India. We have nothing to worry about. You've got a continent on the other side of the world with a billion Chinese, crazy islamist extremists with nuclear weapons, the world's wealth of oil and natural resources, and and empty country with the second largest stockpile of nuclear weapons on earth. And we worry and complain about Mexico???

Hey, the winter Olympics are never as grand (or so it may seem) as the summer. However, I thought the winter olympics in Utah was great... whenever that was.

As for Canada, the country, I love it. We've visited by boat many times and thus far I have yet to be disappointed. It is clean, friendly and lots to do! (Kingston, Brockville, Ottawa and Montreal)... very nice! Seems as though there are no "poor" people here. Even in the city outskirts, clean and nice. Never, ever see liter/trash on the ground. Amazing and compared to Philadelphia or New York City - no comparision.
The docks and parks are beautiful!!

As for them living close to the border, I guess so! The rest of the country is wilderness. Brrrr!

Worry about Mexico? Nah. THe middle east has enough to keep us all thinking - russia included! yikes.

Happy Valentines Day!
Only a few more months of this cold.... can't wait!

You are SAVED!

Not to offend anyone but I hate everything about the Olympics. - Haven't watched more than 10 minutes in the last 35 years.
I got you beat. I haven't watched 1 minute in the last 54 years.

Yes, there are lot of folks in this country that cannot even name all 50 states. Many years ago, I dated a girl from Toronto. She said in high school they had to know the capitals of all OUR 50 states. It is embarrassing, truly.

Now all that being said, the NBC broadcast is targeted to the U.S. audience - all 300 million of us.

By the way, love Vancouver and Whistler!

I have to say, so far the the games have been very good!

If only mother nature would cooperate. Whoda thunk rain in February, in Canada? Is this normal?

We ski Lake Placid nearly every year (not far from Toronto), and we've had our share of unseasonably warm snaps in January, but I've never run into one in the middle of Feb...

...

Very normal for Vancouver. It rains all the time there.

I just took a look at your photo album in your sig.

All I can say is, WOW!

Those anchorages are something else. I don't think I'd ever want to pull anchor and go home. I noticed you swimming in one of the pics- dare I ask, even in August, what the water temp is? I can't stand under 75 without a wetsuit!
