... being built across the street from Herrington Harbor South. The source is pretty weak (whisper down the lane type of stuff).

Can anyone with local knowledge confirm or refute this?

We'd sure love to have an alternative to the Hyatt for a kid-friendly, pool-centric, destination marina!

We are at Herrington North and have not heard that rumor. But there is already a water park at Chesapeake Beach which is a couple miles from Herrinton South. Its too far to walk but maybe South will provide transportation or you could call a taxi maybe. If you contact South they could probably tell you. South is a pretty nice place overall. They have a lot of weddings and catered parties on weekends but when we've stayed there they've shut them down around 11 pm.

Mystery solved! This is most likely the source of the whisper down the lane. Thanks for the info! Looks like decent park...

Tim, we spent a couple of days at Chesapeake Beach last year. That park was closed (it was late in the season,) but it did look pretty nice. We stayed at the Rod and Reel Club. The place was OK, but prepare to be rocked by the fishing boats and action from the bay.

Can I ask why you are looking for an alternative to the Hyatt. My wife and I are planning to head there this summer with our 3 kids for a few days. Any recommendations or heads-up would be appericiated. We went there last year for a wedding and thought is was alright.

It is nice. we just go there alot (3-4x / year). It has it's pros and cons. Just nice to have alternatives...

Pros: the pools; the grounds (i.e. mini golf, volleyball, tennis, golf); there a two really nice beaches just a short dinghy ride up-river where the kids love to play and that have great sunset views; they pretty much leave us alone out on the docks (i.e. they don't enforce "no grilling on or fishing from the docks" rules); good, reliable electric; the marina is never too crowded, they can always put my fleet (usually 3 boats) together with minimal reservation time.

Cons: Expensive (go midweek for best deal); marina is exposed to the NW (T-storms or any sort of westerly can be brutal); the docks are about a foot too high; poor service (on the hotel side); restaurants are also expensive for so-so/banquet-grade food; the hotel can get crowded; aggressive cancellation policy on the marina side (72 hours), we always wait until we're on the way to call.

Hope that helps. We'll still be there a number of times this year!
