I have recently joined a yacht club which offers fuel at a discounted price. I called Thursday and found out Diesel is currently $1.90/gallon. For giggles I called the place I normally fuel up and it was $2.50/gallon. Needless to say I went to the yacht club and put my card in for a preauthorization for $400. (I was at 110gal and the boat holds 400gal.) 110gallons on the starboard side and 100 for the port side. While filling, I was told the pump would turn off once the $400 was hit. Well it didn't! I ended up at 135gal on the port side and so I switched back to starboard and put another 20 gallons in for a total of 265 gallons. I checked out and on my receipt the price I paid was $1.55/gallon!!!! I felt like I hit the lottery!!!A great way to start the summer!

Not to rain on your parade but........ Did you just screw yourself or other club members?

I would agree if, in fact, he "got away" with something. But from the sounds of it the discounted rate was 1.55/gal. I say that because that rate was printed on his reciept. My assumption only, and we know what those are worth!

Sounds like the $400 was the controlling factor and the extra fuel just lowered the overall per gallon cost. But, I'm not a gas price expert.

I guess I'm confused why I might have screwed myself or other club members? I was originally told the current price was $1.90/gal but when I was filling up it was determined that the "former price of $1.55 was still registering at the pump. I say I caught a "window" of opportunity. I wasn't being dishonest at all.

Window of opportunity....I would agree....But that was not stated in the OP.

In any analysis, some assumptions must be made. Let's make 2.

~~~~1. Based on the OP, you were told you would be paying $1.90 for fuel, yet it's spitting out fuel at $1.55.
~~~~2. The club is buying the fuel for $1.70 (pick a number) and selling it for $1.90 as a revenue source for the club.

Instead of $53 plus for the club, they incurred a $66.25 net loss on your purchase and an $xx.xx net loss on every purchase thereafter. That money has to be made up somehow.

It's 30 June. I wonder if anybody changed the pump price.

Keep in mind if the fuel that was purchased by the OP was showing 1.55 on the pump, the club had already purchased that fuel at something less than the 1.55. No loss to the club. I've always been somewhat upset that fuel prices are always adjusted up on a daily basis without regard to the price actually paid for the fuel in the sellers tank.

I agree in principle, but in the end it is likely a wash as it works both ways. When fuel was pushing $4 a gallon and things started to quickly drop off, I'm sure a bunch of retailers were selling fuel at less than what they paid for it.
