What do you guys have as far as your insurance policy coverage goes on your boat? I have heard many people in the 200-400 range for insurance but they seem to be quoting me considerably higher (500-600). Ive checked around to a few differnt places, nboat included. Just looking for tips on how to get a cheaper insurance.

Thanks in advance!

What boat do you have? I pay about 1,100/yr on a 260DA.

Since you appear to be in Florida, you are going to pay more than our friends in the upper 48 and Hawaii, and will have fewer choices and higher deductibles.

My hurricane deductible went to 10% this year, on an agreed value of 75K.

I am with NBOA.

There are lots of variables like: where you boat, where you keep your boat, age of boat, type of boat, your personal boating experience, etc...

If you provide some basic info about you & your boat, someone might be able to give you a more specific response.

As noted above, if you live in FL, you already have your answer.

im getting a 2007 185 sport which will be kept in the garage here at the house.

i use camden fire ins.. i pay 350 a year... full coverage... boaters choice is 759.. they are crazy!

350 WOW I can only dream, mine cost 1000 for a year.

I'm glad for being in Texas when it comes to insurance, even with the disclosed "enhancements" to mine.

I pay about $450 I think it was this year. Progressive Direct (on-line) my agent (who's also a friend) told me to just do it on-line because she can't write it any lower. Besides on-line, you can do unlimited "what-ifs" as far as coverage.

I was shocked at what kind of coverage I could customize for much less money.

Higher coverage amounts weren't even the big premium drivers so mine are really high. Damage with a boat can be HIGH as opposed to a car. We don't generally have fender benders.

2nd year with Progressive my premium went down almost $100. the next year, this year, it went back up but still less than it was when I first got it. Also have disappearing deductibles for what it's worth.

Try Progressive online. It's free and you can get real-time quotes on any different combination or types of coverage. It took me forever doing what if after what if until I tweaked the policy the way I wanted it.

My friend with the performance shop and is a Nordic Dealer switched to them with his 28 Heat. He knows Progressive as a repair center also. He said they are tough on claims but paid what was right although sometimes you have to work with them to prove things that they question. Example, they will prorate props based on age. However, when your talking list price for a prop. compared to what you can really get them for, it washes out.

Tough but not unreasonable, and he switched to them with his personal boat.

I actually got a quote from sea insure for 440 with some really good coverage. so far the best option ive found.

Just tried progressive. Rate was $500 higher than what I pay now. (not quite double)

I suspect the effect is because they don't count the fact that my primary residence is in a different state than the boat. I put the boat at my primary residence, and the rate dropped to something similar to what I have now. Use the waterfront area: Blamo. High rate.

My current company allows for primary residence and marine use in different states.

Yup. I cruise out of Snug Harbor off of Fisher. Family been there for 20+ years.

While living out of state gives me a break on boat insurance. . . .I am getting completely fornicated-against-my-will on the house fire / liability insurance. I was reviewing that policy this morning. The only GOOD news I had on the home front is that I just found out liability on my 22' sailboat is covered under the house liability coverage, so I do not need a seperate policy for that boat. Let's not discuss flood insurance.

$950 this year with NBOA. agreed vaule at 75K and coverage to 50 miles offshore. real nice folks. they would even write me a one time coverage for $50 to cover me if I wanted to make the jump over to the Grand bahamas which I though was pretty special since most companies won't cover a single motor single screw boat more than 5 miles off shore.

always check the fine print when boating in coastal or open waters. if you're 6 miles out when you break down and are only covered to 5 miles. your on you're own....

and yes I am over insured with the hope that a hurricane will take out my boat and give me enough money to get a 260 or 280 depending on the year.

:smt013 That's whom I'm with and they are charging me 1100 a year for 50k value on a 2006 240 Sundeck. WHAT THE HECK!

What you have, what the policy covers, where you boat, what else you insure with the company and your personal record play into the rate.

My record is very clean.

Boat
2003 280 Suncancer
Motor
Twin 5.0L V8 – 520 hoarse power total with in/out dirive

Coverage
- Boat / Motor Actual cash value
- deductible $500

Liability $300,000 This level is required due to my umbrella policy with this same company. If you have a claim that exceeds $300,000 the umbrella takes over.

Medical $2,000

Automatic Aggregate $1,000/$3000
Addl items Equipment $4,000/$7,000
Aggregate $5,000/$10,000

Boat safety class credit - saves $14/year

Boat kept in Winnebago County, Wisconsin

Total Annual premium = $500.

Odd, its $500 to the button.
