Is a high output alternator required if converting from points to electronic distributor?

Doing a tune up now and thought about converting to a fully electronic distributor vs just a new electronic plate in the distributor cap. Part of my preventative maintenance includes a new alternator and wondered if I need a high output? If so, what amperage? Would 55 amp be considered "high output" on a stock 1981 260 mc?

Thank you

What is the wire size coming off your alternator?

55 amp is probably more than you’ll ever need for your boat.

Distributors use very little amps. 55 would be plenty and whatever you have now would be ample.

I'm not sure, it is whatever is stock because its the stock alternator and starter. I'm more concerned with sparking the distributor vs cycling the batteries. Wonder if there is any association between alternator amperage and high capacity electronic distributors.

Short answer is no you don’t need a stronger alternator in order to convert the distributor.

A higher amp alternator is only needed when you have higher than normal draw on the batteries such as an inverter making 110 with a load or lots of lights putting a draw on the 12 volt systems.
