Mercruiser 5.0 MPI with Bravo III drive
Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I inspected my Bravo 3 outdrive.

Because I had some issues with corrosion on my drive I had special interest in my
Mercathode system.
So the first thing I want to know if my Mercathode system was working fine.

When the boat was in the water I had a reading of 700 mvolt with my mercathode sensor in the water. That is nearly enough for a full production. (it must be in the range of 1000mv??)
My blue controller was having the 12Volt reading so that is ok.

So maybe the mercathode sensor is bad?

I took a picture of the mercathode sensor, but I want to know if you guys can give me a conformation that it is really the sensor what I see.

The picture is taking from the ground of. (maybe difficult to see?)

p.s. The outdrive is having new bellows next season by my dealer, and I am wondering if it is a good idea to replaced the mercathode sensor also.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is the Gimbal Housing Mercathode. They are known to go bad or have diminished abilities after several years slipped in water. I would definitely replace it. If it has never been replaced, it will be difficult since the wires are ty-wrapped to the back of the engine. If you have patience, you could probably do this yourself.

Have the dealer do it at the same time as the bellows. It is something you can do but as mentioned earlier, it can be a PITA getting the wires snaked through the hydraulic lines. There are instructions in the Merc manual but if you are having the dealer do the bellows, you might be better off having them do it. I think the parts is just over $100.

Good luck,

Mark
