It is going to be a long summer of bad boaters.

We were in a slip just beside the harbor masters office which is at the mouth of the harbor in Oak Bluffs On Martha’s Vineyard this weekend and it was mayhem with the amount of bad COVID boaters. All day Saturday people where going by is throwing way too large of a wake and then as the in the evening 2 boats jumped up on full plane inside the harbor and proceeded to blast by me throwing a 2ft wake. On Sunday it was more of the same, a jet ski came into the harbor going around 30mph, did a few donuts around some boats on moorings. The harbor master raced over to him on the pump out boat and yelled to slow down, the guy just waved to him, smiled and sped out of the harbor at speed. A little while later the radio starts blowing up with people telling the harbor master that a guy needs to get pulled over for DUI because he seemed intoxicated. He was struggle to get off the wall and then hit a boat on his way out. I was next to the gas dock where they pulled him over. 3 street police questioned him for about 15min and then sent him on his way.

wow. We have only been out once this year but haven't seen anything out on the water but have seen quite a few cruising too fast on our river. Our whole river is no wake and I have probably already seen more 'speeders' this year than all of last year.
Also saw a guy try to get 2 passengers on a 2 seater jet ski and flipped it over right beside the dock and struggled to get it back upright. Also have seen quite a few little kids sitting on the front of pontoons with feet dangling in the water

Love the internet....Before you go bashing someone or a situation you might want to get the facts straight. I know the boat and owner. He is very qualified and has had that boat for many years. He had a transmission cable brake while it was in forward or reverse. Had no control and did an amazing job getting to the fuel dock. I was 2 boats behind him as he was attempting to get it to the dock to deal with the situation. The rest of your statements are true. And OB is infamous for jack ass' behaviors. Gets old about August.

Love the internet? .... why not shut it down at the beginning and have it towed over ?

I would have to agree with the Blueone. The boat was safely at a dock when the crazy manoeuvring started. He didn’t have to try to move a boat with a faulty transmission in a tight marina. He may have owned the boat for a few years, but there are too many bad judgments going on in that video.

Fair enough, I will pull the video out of respect for the Captain but why not shut it down before you hurt someone. What if someone fell in the water and got caught between the boat and the wall. Very dangerous situation.

We have same problem. The state boat launch is near our marina. People think the no wake zone is only to help them get back on their trailers.

We were out last Sunday and the river was pretty crowded. All these new boaters do not know "right of way" rules, it was giving my wife a stroke because we were on plane in our 320 and a little 19' bow rider was not paying attention and crossed right in front of us heading over to an island. I had to make a hard starboard turn just to keep from running him over. I think new boaters should be required to have to take at a minimum an initial boating safety course before they can get their boat registered.

Well...."right of way"...isn't really a thing unless you're dealing with sail boats under sail or commercial vessels doing work. For us power boaters stand-on vs give-way is determined by the direction of travel relative to the other boat, not who is on plane, nor who has the bigger boat. Of course that doesn't excuse someone from cutting you off. Though if you were approaching fast enough and close enough from behind that it required "urgent" action, maybe it was a bit too tight to begin with?

We could probably all use a brush up on the rules and regs from time to time. I myself learned quite a bit sitting with my 11 year old as he got his license a few weeks back...

I agree, I just did this with my daughter as well this winter. It was interesting what I took for granted as the "rules" after boating for 40yrs and what the regs really say.

This is the exact reason we take the bus to OB or ride bikes there.

Although I do miss being rafted 4 boats deep on the old day dock in front of Nancy's needing to get out.

Agreed but still doesn't excuse common sense. If I'm driving down the road and see a tractor trailer coming through a red light I'm not going to continue on even though I have the right of way.

There are right of way considerations (maybe not requirements) based on size of boat. If you’re in a narrow channel and you have a 15” draft you should yield right of way to a boat with a 5’ draft. This isn’t happening anymore.

This weekend, I watched a sail boat under power coming straight for me (crossing from his side to my side of the channel). I noticed everyone was on the bow with no one at the helm. I blew my anemic horn, which was useless in the wind, and came to a stop just as they plowed into a sand bar. I almost didn’t stop but figured that would be bad karma.

Another sail boat anchored in the ICW, with one anchor. He was blocking 2/3rds of the channel.

People are just careless.

This has been going on for ever....this weekend my wife and I were in the dinghy... I basically turned and went the other way when a boat approached us when we were in the bay... another time I had some goof ball come out of the marina on plane with us sitting there 30' from him putting out a 3 foot wake and waved at me... like we were friends

What makes you think these morons would actually pay attention and learn something?
