Boat Info
2005 260 Sundancer. 2003 F250 Super Duty V10 Ford Tow. 5.0 KW Kohler genset. Old school Naman GPS.
Engines
350 MAG MPI, Bravo 2 drive.
After getting out of the water last weekend, we were doing our normal cleaning routine. I was flushing the engine and the dreaded smart craft alarm went off, showing high temp alert.

I am at 237 hours on an original impeller, so I am pretty sure it is time. I was standing behind the drive and still seeing water come out, but not as strong as usual. I checked the thermostat as I just replaced it at 180 hours and all seemed well.

I know I could call the SeaRay dealer and just ask what the cost is, but I just wanted to see what others have been seeing as far as price range.

Boat and engine info are on the signature.

Thanks ya'll!

If you can get to your raw water pump...it's just the cost of the impeller kit. search the site there is enough information here to DIY. It help me last fall replacing both of mine and save me some $$$. Well not really just got to spend it on other toys for the boat. If I remember I believe they local shop here was going to charge me a couple of hundred for about 2hrs of work. Good luck

Do it yourself. It only takes about 30-45 minutes per motor. Easy job (providing you can get to your pump easliy).

It costs me:

- $18 in parts
- 1 Hour
- the skin from 5 knuckles
...and any remaining respect I could've had for Mercruiser "engineering"

+1

I think I lost more skin. :smt013

I also managed to mess up one of the little connectors for the multi point drain system. It won't grab the little plastic tube any more. I'll have to fix that next spring when I do the next impeller change.

Getting to the 2 hoses on the back of the pump was the most difficult part of the job. There should be a little more room to work around the 350 than I have in my boat. Take a shot at replacing it yourself. If you get stuck, pay a mechanic to finish the job for you.

Your mechanic should do it as part of your 100 service. I have my mechanic pull and service the drive, change the gas filter, change the impeller and he some other small maintence stuff, for around $350. The impeller should be changed out every 100 hours in the salt and once each year in fresh water, IMHO.

I paid about $250 for both 454s in my 1997 330DA. That included parts. The mechanic earned his money. He first rigged some boards so he could lie down. I handed him the tools and parts as he worked. Compared with what the dealer wanted it was a bargain.
I had Crusader 502s on a previous boat and I could do everything in about 45 minutes. Why Mercruiser made it such a BEAR I don't know. STUPID!!
I wish someone would do a YouTube How To film on this project. Something like a "___For Dummys". Very very basic right down to which wrenches, etc. It probably can't be done THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE CAMERA!!!

I paid $240.00 for parts and labor for impellars on my 8.1's. I had it done by a mercruiser mechanic who just got laid off. We both benefitted!!!

ALrightly, thanks everyone. I will take a look at the DIY, I don't want to screw it up. I have learned how to do some things, but this may be out of my league. I think I'll start it up and have the mechanic on standby.

Thanks again.

On a 260DA, it should be an ok job, not sure as you have the genset option and that might make it tight getting in there. Also I heard a rumor that Merc was changing the design of the raw water pumps this year to *finally* include brass wear plates - not sure if that has happened, but worth asking about as the original design is crap.
