So finally gave up and had to call a tech in. He says the voltage regulator is bad and have ordered one (not cheap!). Symptom was it would turn over but not start, however if you held the start button it would run until you released. Right before that it started struggling under load and then the voltmeter in the panew was going crazy. He held the start on and plugged a meter into a socket and noticed it was only producing 20v max.

So looking at the tight space on top of the generator on a 280da since it is tucked in a perfect spot to make it hard to work on (I am sure a design feature;), I am wondering how we are going to replace it voltage regulator. Has anyone done this on a similar boat?
