Thought I'd lost the impeller, but when I pulled the cover off, it looks ok. However the shaft freewheels so the impeller doesn't engage. Pulled that housing off and the gear looks good. So what do I try next?

Did not see a yellow sleeve. I can feel something in the main unit, but can't tell what it is. Looks like it's a pretty massive piece to unbolt.

From my understanding the yellow sleeve connects the pump to the shaft, but I've yet to have one fail on me. After seeing quite a few folks loose them (on a Facebook group I'm in), I spent the few $$ and now carry a spare onboard.

Any idea on how to get to the yellow sleeve to replace? First glance looked like there are maybe 5 bolts to take out or am I missing something?

Not 100%, found this with a quick search on Youtube.

Thanks..im going to crawl back in there and see if I can remove just what looked like an access plate. If not, I'll take some pictures.

Well, look at what I found..

Yes, removed the pump assembly, then there were 2 bolts holding on an aluminum access panel (maybe 10" diameter), and then I could see the main shaft. The broken coupling was laying in the bottom. Shoulda taken some pictures, but I was about done with my pretzel imitation!

Yep, that's why (pretzel imitation, I call it boat yoga) it's best to swap it out while you are already back there and have it all opened up. It probably would add about ten minutes to an impeller swap out.

I'd agree but I've yet to had one fail in 10+ years over 3 boats with a 5E.

Made it to the boat today, replaced the coupling and put everything back together. Everything seems to be working ok, so I'll call this one a success!
Here's some pictures I made while in process.
