Kohler 7.3ECD Diagram

Hello,

Anyone have an exploded diagram of the Kohler 7.3ECD that specifically shows the cooling system and thermostat location they could post?

I have a slow overheating problem and have changed the impeller, back flushed the heat exchanger, purged any trapped air pockets in the coolant lines, checked the oil level, verified the exit raw water flow and verified some (not enough though) heat exchange with the raw water.

Have you cleaned the catalytic converter? You can get salt crystals building up. On my boat the elbow above the seacock also sometimes will get little stuff caught in it that will restrict the water flow. I had the Kohler tech down 3 times before we realized it was the elbow above the seacock. The tech even took the top off the strainer and thought the flow looked good. As soon as I cleaned the elbow out, generator quit shutting down.

OK, I finally got this fixed with the help of local mechanic Justin Brock at DNA Marine Repair. We replaced the thermostat and acid cleaned the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger was partially clogged due to scale build up with only 230 hours use. If you ever need to replace the thermostat and/or clean the heat exchanger replace the o-rings that are between the manifold and heat exchanger. If you don't the old ones will leak and you will have to redo and assemble all over again (don't ask how I know this!!!)

The Kohler design of this area is horrible, a couple simple changes to the bolt locations would make things much easier. If you ever attempt the heat exchanger removal you will know what I am talking about
