I put a ribbon tether on the lowest rung. Still need to swing it up a bit before pulling on the tether but then it swings over and collapses easily. The ribbon is a canvas tie-down and the loop is kept in place by a wound bump of electricians' tape.
The rungs are now cushioned by neoprene weightlifter's grip guards with a 1.25" ID for Olympic size bars. From Atlantis Fitness https://www.exercise-equipment-parts.com/info.html They come in closed 14" lengths so they must be trimmed. I used gobs of wire pulling lube but had to work at it for a long time. You could go by the Love Shopee and ask for their most extreme lubricant or maybe just warm it up in a tub of water. They are on the two lower rungs and cushion amazingly well while still allowing the lid to close.
