I have a 2004 280 Sundancer twin 4.3 mpi and alpha one gen 2 outdrives. I had to do the bellows on the port side. I removed the bell housing and pulled the lower shift cable through after using weed wacker trim line as a guide to reinstall. The shift cable is in good condition. Should I grease the cable core before I put it back through the cable housing? There cable core didn’t have any grease on it when I pulled it through.

I have never seen it recommended - think it would gum things up in the long run. Unless you know the age and are certain it is in good shape, I would replace the shift cable and bellows since you are this far in.

Like @BillK2632 said. Every cable I've come across has had a plastic liner, which should be run dry out of fear of the grease just gumming-up things.

Thanks! I appreciate the quick responses.

Like Nate said, the inner sheathing is a delrin sleave. The most I would ever do is spray it with silicon spray lube and nothing more. But I do grease the shift end with a good amount of grease. But I remove my drives for the winter and clean and grease everything, every year anyways.
