I need some help getting my Lowrance HDS-5 to work properly. I bought it from Jim at BOE, who was very friendly and informative. I had it professionally installed about 10 days ago. The transom mount transducer was mounted with marine epoxy in the bilge area....all looks good. The sonar screen is not working as it should. I've confirmed which transducer I received and installed it as instructed by technical support at Lowrance. What's especially frustrating is I wait 20 minutes on "hold" at Lowrance (twice now) only to have my cell call dropped just when it seems I'm making progress. My boat's in the water and I am very anxious to get this unit to work! Does anyone have this same unit?
Also, I'm boating strictly on Lake Erie and they sold me the Nautic Insight version. Is that the correct one?

It's probably impossible to tell but you may have air bubbles trapped beneath the transducer. Are you getting a depth finder reading? If there is any wood or floatation foam in that area it won't shoot through it. Mfg's. are very specific about which epoxy will work. It you don't have any of these issues then it's probably pure electronics.

I've called Lowrance once! Get comfortable before you call again.

I recently installed the HDS-8 w/ 80/200 Transom Transducer and Insight....the unit works great and I've been very pleased with the sonar detail. We installed the ducer on the transom....was not aware that it could go in the bilge, too. I didn't know that Lowrance has a shoot-thru for these units....?

Is your bottom cored? Could the installer have put it over a strake?

Jim,

Received the Lake Insight unit yesterday....Thanks! I'm going to the boat this afternoon, so wish me luck. I did contact Marine Max in Catawba Island and they assured me my boat is full fiberglass. Hopefully, this new unit will work. If not, will check into your idea of the transducer being installed over a strake. I would hope not...will keep you posted. Thanks again for your help!

I have the HDS-10. Have the transom transducer. Love the unit. Also have the BR-24 Radar unit. Quite an impressive setup.

Towed my boat to the installer and had the transducer mounted on my transom...the guy treated me fairly and the unit works great now! I'm learning how to use it more and more and so far I really like it. I really didn't want to have any holes drilled in my boat, but he did a really nice and professional job. I also was glad to see that my transom is dry and in great shape, so that was good news too. Glad to have the boat back in the water. Wife and I had a great time catching perch Saturday night too, so it was a productive day.
Thanks to all for your responses.

Done properly, with or without a cored hull, holes can be placed in any hull. Glad you had a pro do it and that you are satisfied with the job. I still haven't permanently mounted my HDS-5 screen yet. Leaning to wards a ram mount. I'm thinking about getting the equipment necessary to download and upload revisions by Lowrance to the unit. Have fun on the water and safe & sober boating.
