I got a Magma Grill for Christmas. I was planning to mount it in the rod holders but was wondering which mount you guys have used and if any are better or worse than another? There are apparently two different types of rod holder mounts for these grills.

One is like this-

The other is like this-

Any one use either or both of these?

I can't WAIT for boating season to get here!!!

I have the former. It seems to work fine. One of my neighbors has the latter, it seems to work fine, too. Wish I could give you great science for the choice, but I have the first one because my wife said she preferred how it looked.

However, Spring is a long way away and there could be some subtleties in this decision process of which I am unaware.

I've heard good things about the one that just slides into the rod holder. I think the second one locks into the rod holder for more security. I haven't priced them to see if one is more expensive than the other either...although with boats talking price seems kinda silly to me...to a point.

Thanks for the replies! I agree, lets eat!!!

I have both mounts - the first one above on a large Magma BBQ and the second one inherited with my boat on a smaller Magma kettle BBQ. Not sure if there is a weight limit on the second one, above, and I'm not sure what type of BBQ you are using, however if weight isn't a concern, I think the second, locking one works better. The steel bar (option 1) slips into the rocket launcher and will lock into a steel bar in the bottom of the rod holder. I find that there is a little bit of play which means the BBQ can rotate a little while in use. Not enought to be a hazard, but enough to be a pain. The plastic, locking version, does not move once locked in.

SOLD! Thanks for the input, I can see where some slight movement can be annoying when trying to flip veggies or anything for that matter. Plus, it's only $13 more for the second one...

I'm looking at the serving tray that attaches to the front of the grill too. Mine is the Newport.

While you are at it, they make a great big tray that is mis-advertised as being for fish cutting. It is in fact a pretty good holder of drinks and margarita machines.

We must be thinking alike, I was just suggesting that to the Admiral...

Just looking at this stuff makes me want spring to get here NOW!!!:smt038

I have the first and think its OK. As far as movement goes, I don't really experience any. I find it is very sturdy and think nothing of running with the BBQ in place.

You're going to love the grill. I have the Catalina, which is pretty close to the Newport. I find it holds a flame nicely in the wind. I found that I couldn't keep the flame going with the Kettle that I also have - maybe I was doing something wrong.

Before I got the Magma, I had bought a Kuuma at my marina. It was really inexpensive - thought I was getting a great deal. Turns out that not only was it inexpensive, it was also really cheap. Once again, couldn't hold a flame. Also after one weekend of usage, the whole thing tarnished and the lid warped - really cheap grade of stainless steel.

I was really disappointed. The Kuuma product used to be known as Force10 and I found that to be quality product. I had a built-in Force 10 on my last boat. Maybe the brand got sold to new owners?

I brought it back into my marina manager - really nice lady - and she took it back immediately with apologies. Even though she didn't need to, to make it up to me she ordered in the Magma and sold it to me at her cost. So at the end of the day, I did end up getting a great deal.

Enjoy!

Nice grill, santa was good to you this year.I have a kuuma and it clamps to the aft side rail. had it for one season and it is tarnished also it is broken.the brass gas pin where the propane bottle screws on broke off:smt089 now i have to order one.if it breaks in any way after i fix it it's going in the trash.

i mounted my grill, using a rod holder, for security i removed the rod holder from the boat, drilled a through bolt through the rod holder and the grill mount that go's into the rod holder and mounted back onto the boat, this way the grill stay's on the boat and their is no chance of my grill going overboard or walking off the dock !!!

I too have the Catalina. I use the first rod holder mount, but instead of sticking it in the rod holder on the boat, which leads to possible drippings on the side of the boat, I made a stand out of the wobbly cockpit table leg, and a folding tri leg stand (http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-locks/porta-leggs.htm). Finally, a custom piece of PVC to simulate the rod holder in the top. Now, I put the grill on the dive platform over an industrial carpet for no mess grilling. The stand also doubles as a table stand for the dock.

Yes, The bait cutting table is a nice add on. I just bought one last month off of Craigslist. $15.00
Unused.
My wife heard it was a bait cutting station. I told her it was a snack tray. She loves it.

+1 here,
This post is 100% correct.
Fix the "little bit of play" with a turn of electrical tape around the mount to take up the play :)

I also have both and like the locking one for the small grill and the other for the big grill..

Lets cook!

Thanks for all the responses guys! So does the grill make a mess on the side of the boat?

If so, I'll probably use the rod mount until I do the swim platform extension later this year. At that point I think I'd like for it to be mounted on the platform...maybe make a pedestal mount.

270win,
I have never had a mess on the side of my boat with the BBQ. If you keep it clean (reasonably clean - not OCD clean), the units are self contained and will not drip.

I've had pedestal mounts on the swim platform of each of my previous four boats as well and they also work great. For my set-up though, I like the rocket launcher better.

P.S., Air O'Nautical - thanks for the words of support. I keep both on board as well and it gives me unlimited options for cooking for large groups as well. Wish my water wasn't quite as solid or I'd be out there cooking now!:smt089
