Well, I noticed the other day the lanyards attaching the spring clevis pin to the bimini pole have started to break due to age. I am going to make my own lanyards and reattach them. Anyone know what the item it called that is at the opposite end of the lanyard? I don't know the name of that part, or where to find it. (http://www.firstchoicemarine.com/popup.aspx?src=images/Product/large/654.jpg) The other end I just need a stainless steel ferrule, however the end that attaches to the bimini, is a solid piece with an eye on it. I can't seem to find it online.

Thanks...

I know WM sells pre-made ones... as well as all the parts. (I investigated, but just havent gotten to fixing my own yet).

I need to replace mine as well. They are attached to the bimini via the rivet. Are you going to drill out the rivet, replace the lanyard and then re-rivet.

No help here but will be watching because mine are just about shot themselves. Question for you though, on my frame the part that attaches is sort of riveted in are yours? I'd been wondering how to remove it and attach a new one without totally messing up the bimini frame.

funny you posted as I was typing... I've got the same issue and was wondering about the rivets

That was my plan, but again, haven't tried. I assumed you'd drill out the center of the rivet with a small bit to make a hole, then a slightly larger bit until the entire thing came out.

Sous, to remove the clevis pin from where it's riveted to the bimini frame, just drill through the center of the rivet. Pick up a pop rivet gun to reattach the wire rope to the bimini frame.

To make new wire rope pin holders, check online for a good crimper and buy some of the appropriate crimps and a few feet of stainless steel wire rope. A good crimper of the type you use to crimp electrical wires would work.

They're fairly easy to make.

Yes, removing a rivet is easy. Drill through the center of it. Most times it will come out attached to the drill bit once you get far enough. Other times you then just pop it out.

I'll be keeping an eye on this topic too to find out what that thing is called!

Hmmm cool. Thanks for the info. I consider myself farily handy, but have never worked with rivets. Of course being a manly man, I would've busted out the drill from the get go, glad I've now got the reassurance that that is actually the correct course of action!

Use a drill bit the same size as the rivet, so normal rivet 1/8" or larger rivet 3/16".

Generally you will find that takes the rivet straight out, also leaves the correct size hole for the replacement rivet. Generally the rivets are aluminium which is soft so will drill ou easily, if the rivet is stainless, then the center is hollow anyway which will line up the drill bit.

I replaced all of mine and I used 40# mono leader line and a crimper.

Drilled mine out. Why would you make your own when the whole unit is $6-7?

I have 12 of them to replace, and the type I have they are running like $10 a piece. I figured I could always use a nice rivet tool for other uses. I would like to reuse my clevis and just attach some new wire rope that is vinyl coated clear. The stainless ferrules for the crimping side is cheap, so is the wire rope. I just can't resource the part that rivets onto the bimini support. I am going to drill them out and re-revit them back on.

I ordered 6 from them and total cost was less than $2.00 each including shipping.

I have used stainless fishing leaders in the past
you can get them anywhere that sells fishing gear for less than 10 cents each in various lengths

Note:

The factory installed rivets are generally stainless steel. If they are, then they should be replaced with SS to avoid the potential for electrolysis. My hands are not strong enough to use a standard rivet gun on a SS rivet. It takes too much pressure. So, if you are doing a lot of SS rivets, you'll need a special gun or drill attachment.

I just removed all of mine. My OCD originally had to have everything back the way it was. Now I really don't mind not having all the keepers on the pins. They stay installed in the Bimini poles anyway. Is it really a necessity that they have a wire attached to them?
