Masters Week

I'd maybe like to see Spieth win it.

CNN said so …. So it must true

Tried to get tickets through the Masters lottery for 20 years. Nope. Stopped once I moved north. Unable to travel any more. That was for sure on my bucket list. Played a lot of golf growing up. Team came in second in the state my sophomore year. We were league champs all 4 years. Got a set of Taylormade's sitting in the basement. They also haven't been touched for 3 years.
I tried the lottery also. But my former company was headquartered there and one guy has permanent passes. He let me use them a couple of times.

However, there were people on the street “selling” badges (you must meet the guy afterwards and return them). So if you really wanted in, you can get in.

What do you think they would be worth for a Friday or Saturday ?

I went about 12 years ago. The asking was about $100 for the day. Price went down as the day started.

In a previous post I mentioned "Permanent Passes"... here is the story.

My former company was headquartered in Augusta for many years and I was in field sales in Illinois. After I joined them, I kept trying the lottery unsuccessfully. So I spread the word in our tech department and in customer service that I was hoping to get a lead on practice round badges.

The Thursday before the Masters, my phone rings and my inside salesman, Grady asks me if I am still interested in a badge. I tell him "Yes, I am still interested". He says that he has two badges for me. I say "Great! What day?". He says "I have two for Sunday". Now I am thinking about the practice rounds on Monday thru Wednesday... and for a moment I am confused because they do not practice on Sunday... Then it dawns on me... TOURNAMENT SUNDAY!

So I go to Augusta and Grady puts me up at his house. Sunday morning he tells me that his Mother-in-Law lives close to the course. He needs to go there and pickup her car for some maintenance and why don't I drive there and I can park in her driveway and walk to the course because it is only a few blocks . I had a great time and stayed at Augusta National way past the end of the golfing. I get back to the MIL's house and ring the bell to get my car keys (I left them in case they needed to move the car). She invites me in and then as Paul Harvey said... Now for the rest of the story.

Augusta National is on the corner of Washington and Berckmans Roads (Now Old Berckmans Road). Turns out then when the MIL got married, Augusta National and the Masters didn't really exist. The young couple bought a farmette on the west side of Berckmans Road. The FIL won many awards for the produce he raised. They also raised four daughters on the farmette. Along the way, Augusta National was built up across the street and the Masters became a "thing"...

After many years the FIL passes and the MIL stills lives on the farmette. One day there is a knock on the door and it is someone representing Augusta National. They would like to buy her property. She says "No, I have lived here my entire adult life (like 60+ years)". They politely say "Thanks you for considering it" and leave.
Next year, she gets another knock on the door. It is representatives from Augusta National and the same thing happens again.
The third year is happens again and she begins to think that "She should discuss it with them" as maybe they would decide not to bother her any longer.
The fourth year, she agrees to discuss it with them. Now they bought the farmette in the 30's for what $5K?? Maybe less... They settle on a price approaching $1,000,000 but she has one other requirement...

Now Masters Tournament badges have been closed for decades. They are willed to other family members. The waiting list has been closed since the 70's, although it was open for a while in the late 80's. Her request? That each of her 4 daughters and herself receive 2 tournament badges each year.

So what shows up? Ten Masters tournament badges and a lot of money. The MIL gives each daughter a tidy sum of money from the estate sale and two Masters Badges. She also buys a townhome just several blocks away from the course. They pay the face value each year for the badges ($100 each I believe). And they each usually go for one or two days and then treat friends to the Masters for $100 for the day. They make a little cash and get their badges paid for each year.

And now you know "The rest of the story..."

Very cool

I'd rather watch it on TV...like most sporting events anymore. I can't stand the crowds.
The masters is not that crowded except for Sunday at the 18th…. But by then you are tired out. I taped it and watched the end when I get home

And I would place my Masters folding chair on 18 first thing. Get there and sit for the last bunch of foursomes in the afternoon....

I have been fortunate to go to 4 Masters over the years. Nothing like it. Only event I know that a daily badge goes for $2k on-line but you can eat like a king for $20.

Sausage biscuit for breakfast and the famous pimento cheese sandwich for lunch. I forgot about the $$$ i spent on Masters souvenirs. If they could fit the masters logo on it....they sold it there.
