I recently purchased a Carver ACMY with a Freedom 800 windlass that was not working right. The pressure arm was broken along with the bushing that holds the chainwheel assembly together. I replaced both, purchased new chain and rope and as soon as the chain goes into the windlass the pressure arm breaks. I replaced the pressure arm 4 times after the Maxwell distributor told me the chain and rode are the correct size.
Finally after talking to a repair facility on the east coast of FL, I was told that the Freedom 800 was discontinued due to problems such as mine.

Has anyone had similar issues with the Maxwell Freedom windlass? The repair tech said that Maxwell has an RC 8 unit whose deck unit will fit the 800 motor. I'm thinking of writing the company and ask them if they will consider offering me a discount on the RC 8 deck mount since the 800 unit has a known design flaw.

It doesn't hurt to ask for the discount. The worst that can happen is they say "NO". Just like at home!!!

If it's a known issue, I would ask for a credit. We have a Maxwell something (550??) that gets a lot of use. It has been flawless and the company enjoys a good reputation.

Does your Maxwell 500 have both chain and rope?

yes. About 50 feet of chain and 200 feet of rope. We've used it the last 6 week ends and a few times in June, July and August before that. That has been our pattern for 6 years.

I have a Maxwell 800 on my boat and its all rope. I have used it every weekend possible since 1994 and its still flawless?
