Merc 8.1L EFI Issue

Hello,

Haven't been on in awhile due to some personal issues. Went out a couple weeks ago and on the return the stbd engine would not start. After returning to the dock I noticed it would start for a couple seconds then sputter and die, but it was in gear, would not start after that. This is a 2008 Sundancer 38DA with Mecury 8.1L engines and V-Drives. This weekend I tried starting the engine again and same result, starts then dies (sputters) but is in gear. I can't get the engine to restart again unless I wait about 1/2 hr, then same result. I checked the plugs and they look OK compared to the port engine plugs which runs fine. The intake mesh filter is clean, fluids are OK. Seems like the engine is flooded.

Not sure what you mean when you say "it was in gear?" Did you get it running and it died only when putting it in gear?

Sounds like a fuel issue.

A bad IAC valve, I believe, would lock the engine into "guardian mode" but you could run up to 1200RPM.

I'll look into the IAC valve.

The engine will start then die (sputters) in a few seconds. It starts in gear for some reason even though it's in neutral, and I can set it to dock mode and/or throttle only mode and it still starts in forward gear. The port engine runs fine and does not have any issues.
