Using the west marine extractor and got 4 qts the first use but now am only getting out 2 qts everytime. Its weird. The 1/4 inch tube is a 1/2 inch shorter than the dipstick.

Anybody have the same issue and know of a pump that works better?
Thanks

Lengthen the tube to be longer than dipstick. Or, convert to hose end if your dipstick has that end on it.

When you say "everytime"... how many times have you done it that way and how did you then get the rest of the oil out?

Another option, still, is to slip your oil sucker's hose directly onto the top of the dipstick tube - a 3/8" ID hose works perfect. A small band clamp is sometimes needed to make it tight.

Do your engines have the quick-drain hose? Connect your sucker to that and you'll be drawing through the oil pan drain.

And... another possibility is that the oil sucker is shot - there's really only a couple "good" ones out there that last for a long time.

On my West Marine pump I can feel the hose hitting the bottom of the oil pan with plenty of length to go. Seems weird to think your dipstick is so long that the normal length of hose isn't reaching. Did you buy the pump new?

Guys,
Thanks for all of the replies. I did buy the pump new. Then I actually bought another one (unfortunately). LD, I tried several times on both engines. the tube just isnt getting to the bottom. Tried straightening the rod in it and all that. no luck. So I have been just removing 2 quarts at a time for several times throughout the season to keep it clean.
I am not aware of having quick drain hoses... I can try and find those. Like the idea of working off the top of the dipstick column - will see if that is more effective.
One question, anyone know of a better model than the west marine one?

I see your signature is a 2007, so you almost certainly have the hose top adaptor on your dipstick. Use that, way more effective. Remove all the small ID tubing from your extractor and add the hose fitting to the larger diameter tube. Warm up engines for a few minutes to thin the oil, and less than 5 minutes you can suck out almost all of it.
Mityvac makes good ones, I have an OEMTools version from Amazon still going strong after 5 years. One of the best is the jabsco bucket with 12v pump, takes 30 seconds. Merc makes one. I had this one and it lasted 5 years maybe. https://www.partsvu.com/oil-crankca...E4UiILeTSDk4VF4i1U41KHvA2hSLwvxwaAknmEALw_wcB

Best one, hands down:
Topsider vacuum system. Simple. Slowly sucks it out. No wires. No batteries. No impellers. You just pump up a vacuum and watch it flow. I tossed all those aggravating electric pumps. When they worked, they would either pump too fast and make a mess or the impeller would not get a suction for whatever reason. It’s slow, but I am never in a hurry on maintenance anyway.

The key is to make sure your engine is warm.

I had a hand pump, vacuum type, and it did ok. Bought this, works awesome. Flip the switch one way, pumps into the bucket,’flip the switch the other way, pumps into my storage container. No mess at all, and gets a noticeable amount more oil out

This is the best one on the market when it comes to powered units... short of going to a professional setup. However, we use a couple of these in the shop, as well, and they are last a long, long, long time - then you just pop a new impeller in there. By "long", I mean easily over 100 oil changes - long enough, anyways, that I truly don't know how long. Note that Chris linked to the one with the bronze head - that's the better one.

I also have a MityVac 7201 - as far as suction powered goes, I really like it. It holds 2 gallons and sucks the oil out amazingly fast. I've had that for about 10 years and it's still going strong - probably gets used about 10 to 15 times a year.

Are you doing this with the boat on a trailer or in the water? I dry stack my boat and the pump doesn't get all of the oil out when the boat is sitting on the rack. When floating, it gets all of it.
