Did Mercruiser make a 7.4L in the Horizon Series?

I was under the impression that 6.2 or 8.1 were the choices. I've spent some time researching this but as expected, Merc website was of little value.

I see now that in certain years, the Horizon version was indeed offered on the 7.4.

These particular motors where time bombs when used in the wrong applications. I owned a 390 repowered with them in 1999. years of headaches with reversion, caused by the extreme cam timing overlap.

Yes they did make the 7.4 in the Horizon series. the 7.4 MPI produced 310 HP while the 7.4 Horizon produced 380 HP.

There were some problems with water ingestion due to the log style mufflers that were originally installed on these motors. Several of the log style mufflers were replaced with lift style instead. The cam overlap allowed water to be pulled back into the cylinders on occasion. I believe this was more due to quicker deceleration and the water in the exhaust was able to run forward to the motor.

I have a 2001 340 with the 7.4 horizons and the original log style mufflers and have 750+ hours on the original motors. I have not had any problems with them.
