Mercruiser Parts Shortage?

Mercruiser 898 (might need replacing)

A little background; I am doing some major surgery on my 1977 SeaRay. I removed the old Mercruiser 898 engine and put in a 2005 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI engine and a Alpha 1 Gen 2 drive.

I have been replacing some parts on the 5.0 engine and I have been able to find most parts easily with decent shipping (2 to 7 days). But once I got to a couple parts, it seems to be a different story. Engine/part info is below. Anywhere I look, the OEM flame arrestor number seems to be on back-order. The PartsVu website had the lowest price but it will not be available to ship out until sometime next month. Same thing for the Stud for the gimbal housing. They will not be shipped out for 3+ weeks. Are these just parts that don't get replaced often enough for the manufacturer to make more of?

I am going to start looking for a local boat yard that might have mercruiser engines laying around. But it was just a big eye opener when I came across this issue.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Mercruiser 5.0 MPI : 0M601683
Alpha 1 Gen 2 : Gimbal 0F571197 , Drive 0F498834
Part numbers:
flame arrestor - 863416T
stud - 16-56296

Thanks,
Alex

@JHornsby3 thanks for the reply.

I did look at the flame arrestor in the MarineEngine site. I figured the extra $60 wasn't worth getting it a week or two earlier. I should probably just stop being cheap lol

The stud is for the gimbal housing that goes through the transom. This one in particular, I have a feeling there has got to be something out there in a autoparts or home improvement store that would work the same. That is something I am hoping someone with more experience here can help with.

Give me the specs on it and I can see if this set up I have as a spare has one. Or take it to someplace like Fastenal or the likes and have them match it up for you. Other than really special stuff, fasteners I get locally. Bolts, nuts and the likes I find a better stainless part for less money. I have a problem paying for someone's logo when said logo isn't worth an extra 50-60%.

The studs have 7/16-14 on one end and 7/16-20 on the other end. The catalog shows the original studs being 4.75 inches long. But there are a couple alternatives that state 4.25 inches. I just found out about these two alternatives (818834 and 866563). I also prefer not to pay the extra money for a logo.

Ok, so it's a stud that goes through the transom. With a nut on the inner plate and the gimble mount. I will check the one I have and see what it has. For some reason, I thought those were a stainless carriage bolt.

Boat boneyards are your friends.

I bought a flame arrestor last year for 10 bucks.

Any machine shop can knock out that stud too. Eff waiting weeks for something that silly.

I wish! The nearest boat bone yard is over 150 miles from me. And it's all old crap that is rotting on the ground. Would love to find one here. Nothing on the coast either. A few guys that deal in old outboards and oregon is trying to ban 2 strokes.

I have 10 of the 56296 studs. I can ship tomorrow. I was going to rebuild my transom but replaced with new instead.

Check the length of the studs on your housing. I believe two of the studs on my alpha gen 1 were shorter than the rest

I have the ones in the gimble soaking in PB blaster. I couldn't get them out with visegrips. I even put some heat to them.

I had one extremely stubborn one it snapped a few times. I soaked it for a week a ton of pb blaster with no luck. I ended up heating the housing with map gas, welding a nut on the end of the stud, quickly cooling just the stud with a can of upside down canned air then I hit it with the impact and it came out. I use this differential cooling technique successfully many times for stubborn fasteners, just be careful some canned air is flammable.
