hey guys.. i have an issue with my fathers boat, he baught a 92 bayliner 2255, its a merc v6 with alpha drive, it ran fine for two years that he had it when halfway through the season he was getting water in the oil, anyways he took the top end apart and found a crack whcih is fixed with JB-Weld ( which i dont like) but he got it back together and it fired up, about 5 minutes running it started smoking from what i thoguht was from all new gaskets, anyways i made him shut it off and heard popping and gurggling/boiling somewhere inside the motor, i did notice the valve cover gasket was crooked slightly on one side in the rear of motor, i was told it could be from that slightly crooked gasket slightly blocking a waterjacket and pushing water into the cylinders? or into the oil?

thats what im assuming as to why the one spot is crooked he probably forced it down to catch a bolt... hmmm i will ask him

intake manifold gaskets CAN be installed reversed ,the open port goes on the therm side. a intake manifold only has water passing thru it under the therm housing.
Exaust manifold gaskets CAN be installed reversed on big block engines.

he swares its installed correctly that it only fit one way... do u think now that its cooled off that we can run it before it smokes so we can winterize it quickly and then over winter can take it apart like before?

If that gurgling noise was from water in the head / cylinder... time is short. Water ingestion is the #1 killer of marine engines. Best get in there asap...
