Mystery cranking problem. Stumped.

Update. I found the slave solenoid (wasn't hard) and it was the problem. I've had them go bad before but it was a complete failure. I'd never had them go flaky like this one. Anyway, thanks for all of the feedback and I just wanted to let everyone know what the resolution was. I've also bought a spare for when the port engine does the same thing.
I know it's been almost 5 years, but do you remember the part number for the slave solenoid

To be honest, I don’t even remember having this issue. I wouldn’t have remembered it all if you hadn’t resurrected this thread. I don’t know the part number but they made a zillion of these motors and didn’t change much. Probably almost any slave will work.
