Hi everyone -

Relatively new to this site but I have a 1995 370 Sundancer and I need a new Windlass. Any recommendations on which one to get. Currently my windlass isn't equipped to have a chain and I would like to get one that can have a chain so my anchor can set better. Any help is appreciated.

Cheers !!

I'm sure someone will argue with me, but get a Good. They have a rope chain windlass that is absolutely first rate. I also think they have a trade in program as well. Very great people to deal with.

+1

Just upgraded to the F850C, traded in my CFD500 and am very impressed and quite happy.

Its not cheap but the quality is excellent, as is the technical support from Good.

Sorry to hijack, but great name and great bourbon. We are visiting the distillery when we go to Knoxville for the Sea Ray Homecoming!!

I also recently purchased the good anchor/chain windlass and am very happy with it. comes with new rope/chain combination. If you have the old model good windlass they will give you 300 bucks if you send it back. I purchased it because It is a direct replacement for mine and I didn't have to pull new wires for the controls. INstallation was relativly easy. I had to cut a new Hole for it fit correctly but they send an adapter plate to cover installation points.

Spikedaddy -

Thanks, I am a collector of Maker's Mark Bourbon as a hobby and of course love to drink it as well. Couldn't think of a more perfect name for the boat !! Cheers to everyone.

Good to know about getting some cash back if I send it back. Every little bit helps.

That is great! I have a 96, 370 that I purchased this summer and it has a Goode windlass. I hate that it is all rope and want to make it a priority to change. The rope chain combination makes setting the hook a lot easier.
So did you work directly with Goode for this exchange? If so, you wouldn't happen to have a contact person would you? Would love to keep it as simple as possible.

Yes you work directly with the good co. Just look them up on the web. Their are only a few people working there. I believe they are in NJ. I spoke to the same gentleman every time I called. They were every helpful and really easy to deal with. keep the packing slips and reciepts. I used the new box to send the old one back in. I believe , don't hold me to this, they even paid return shipping on the core. Can't recall. Been a while ago. Yes there are cheaper ones out there but, The new windlass is designed as a replacement for the old one. They send templates for drilling the new hole. I believe it is a 2 inch hole . They also send wiring diagrams for the swap. Installation was a breeze for me. Don't know how much space you have to access your anchor locker. Had to make new power and ground wires, the new windlass motor is in a different location. Of course there was no extra wire on the existing one.

All in all it was a very good experience. The new windlass is quick and quiet. I love the way it freefalls on the way down. This gets you to the bottom a lot quicker and easier than having to pay out all that line. I believe I got the 5/8 line with 10 feet of chain. There is an upgrade option I think. We are in a lake so not much current. Hooks great every time. Bent my anchor once got it hooked so good.

Just check the website and make the call. You won't be sorry. I believe the total cost after return to be around $1500. us.

I just purchased the Good F850C replacement, I have a 390 like you do, what did you do on the deck, did you use the starborard plate they furnished? Also, where did you install the the angle that holds the solenoid, it looks like the motor will block access. Any information or photos would be great.

I did not have a windlass on my 270 and installed one last season. I found that not all windlasses use the same size electrical feed wiring. My windlass 'Anchorlift' requires two wires the size of battery cables (I forget what gauge they are). These cables were expen$ive and a PITA to run. If I were you I would definitely know what gauge wire you already have and what gauge wire your new windlass will need.

I thought it was fairly normal to have "battery cable" size wires to run a windlass. Do some operate om small wires?
