Hello, I am a newby. I have an 89 18ft Sea Ray Mercruiser inboard V6 and Alpha One outboard. I'm having a very hard time getting to lock into forward and easy lock into reverse. It randomly dies from either gear into neutral. Throttle cable to carb is great. What's the trick (if there even is one) on adjusting these shift cables? Sometimes I have to start getting into throttle from idle just enough to get it to lock into forward. Please help.

I posted the instructions already. Do a search and you should find them.

I did a search and didn't come up with any help before I posted the thread. I must be typing in the wrong words. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the quick reply.

Thank you so much I found the pages 2a 14 thru 17. I'll compare them to my shop merc manual. I did what the manual said but sounds like everyone's doing their own adjustment on that barrel nut. Thanks again I'll work on it tonight and let you know. Need this done for the weekend. This forum is great!

I didn't even read the merc manual that was posted.

I've always gone by the barrel. 6" at the intermediate cable in forward, from the center of your mounting hole to the center of the barrel.

Got it all sorted out. Hasn't gone in and out of gears this great for a long time. Just had it on the lake yesterday. Perfect. Your right it is pretty simple. 6" is the key. Thanks again.
