The last 12v stereo I bought, that didn't come factory with an automobile, had a cassette player. The stereo in the boat is seriously malfunctioning (not the original Clarion). I need a new stereo but have no clue what to get and am not that "into it" to do a ton of research.

We still use mostly CDs and am/fm radio. We don't need to blast the sound to the riders on the towables. The kids will be getting into MP3 in the next few years. I would like to be able to control all the functions from the cockpit, swim step (don't want to crawl off my floatie to change the station/disc track), and cabin. Should we get a separate stereos for the cabin cockpit? (I don't know what music the kids will like, but odds are the parental unit will not like it.)

Suggestions?

Is your current stereo mounted in the cabin or outside? Do you have a typical "DIN" sized hole to fill once you remove the current stereo, or is it bracket mounted or...?

In cabin, Pioneer has some nice units at a low price point. A typical head unit out of the box will not blast the sound...adding amps will.

I'm looking at a similar replacement - I still have the original clarion but it is way past the useful life. I assume your layout is the same as mine - it has a DIN sized hole behind the power panel door. I would still recommend a marine unit due to the moisture but it's protected enough that you could probably get away with a normal auto unit. Even the low end units now have an aux in so you could connect an i-pod - when you increase the price you then can get remotes, more power, etc.

I'm looking at something similar to this one at BOE.
