Boat Info
1981 searay sundowner 22 ft
Engines
260 mercruiser
have 1981 sundowner and have to replace engine now have 260 mercruiser anything better for this boat???

My motto is: Easier is more gooder! sooo
replace with same exact motor,.. Is easier job short term. Added benefits include all the holes line up, wiring plugs fuel lines etc.
BUT still have old carbureted inefficient fuel hog motor
OR
put in a 260 HP multi port injected lighter fuel sipping "won't need maint for long periods, and then very little"
this is more expensive and more work short term, but if you can afford AND you plan on keeping long enough could pay off exponentially
Caution!!!!!!-> before considering upgrading power make sure everything else in drivetrain is capable IE I would NOT put a 260HP MPI on an ALPHA outdrive

Look into the mercruiser remanufactured plus engine packages. They also come with a 3 year warranty from merc.. these are great package from mercruiser i install them all the time.

Is there a torque difference in the carb vs mpi engines? I have an alpha 1 outdrive with a 260hp carbed engine.

I despise Mercs. That said, best bang for the buck would be a remanned TKS. It should be plug and play.

There are several ways to increase the performance of your boat and stay with a small block GM motor. The real problem is the Alpha drive. I understand that 300hp is about the limit for that drive. I'm concerned for that reason with my Cobalt. The motor is a GM 383 "Stroker" motor originally built about 12 years ago. The horsepower is unknown and I am going to have to be cautious applying power.

Without changing the drive to a Bravo1 I think you are limited to something about 300hp or lower if you stay with the small block.

Thats what my research has proved az well. About 300hp max. If my,350 puts out 260hp in sure your stroker should be over 300hp.

Everyone I have polled agrees with you. I've heard estimates from 300-425HP. The only thing that gives me hope is the motor has been in the boat for the past 10-12 years. It does have a 2 year old SEI drive so we'll just have to baby it and hope for the best.
