MERC 6.2 MPI
Looking at a 1977 240 sbd new running gear 6.2 merc mpi coupled with a bravo ii out drive. Pretty spendy (19000) looking at the age of the boat but original owner. We want a fishing boat that can handle costal waters about 2 or 3 times a year. Weekend trips and such. Any suggestions?

Look around at what else you can buy for $19,000!

I'm not a fan of the 6.2.The Bravo 2 is indestructible.Like others have said there's a lot more out there for that coin. The 77 240 was a well built boat (maybe over built),however it is has a narrow beam which is something to consider if you are venturing offshore.

That 6.2 has to be a newer motor for that year boat... I love my 6.2 Horizon. 330 HP and it is tied to my BII... I'd tie it to a BIII if I had the money...

The 6.2 is a stroked GM350 V8 small block, modified by Mercury Marine to have a longer stroke, the distance the piston travels up and down.

They did a good job with this engine modification. Initially skeptical I have become a believer. The engine produces NO MORE low end tork then a GM350 V8 small block, the extra ponies are all at the top end of the RPM range. No, you cannot find a tork curve listed anywhere, Merc will not publish it.

So the 6.2 stoked engine is good for a bit more top end speed.

Now that Bravo II, tough as nails drive. Simple. Strong. Great drive that is under sold in my opinion vs the more vogue Bravo III with its dual props that have mojo. Great for power.

Put the two together? That makes as much sense as putting a snowplow on a sports car.
