V6 OMC - Cobra outdrive
As promised, here are photos of the '87 Seville BR I bought a week ago. This is how it looked when I got it.

I've already removed the trolling motor and fishing seat mount in the bow, polished the hull and the the trailer wheels, fixed a bunch of odds and ends and taken out for about an hour on the lake (more time coming-have not used any of the toys yet).

The only thing I've noticed is that it's hard to get back into neutral when running on the water. I researched that problem and will be starting the step by step diagnosis.

You might be able to adjust the cable but my experience say change the main shifter cable. OMC drives must be adjusted correctly of you could have a gear set explode. I have included a link for you on how to adjust and care for an OMC drive.

The boat looks very very sharp great find.

I can second that link. Had a Cobra in a previous boat. Keep and eye on the shift cable from the engine to the drive, if it's black it should be changed to the new red one. I had the boat for 6 years and changed the cable when I got it and again just before I sold it. If you keep the cable adjusted it should work flawlessly, I never had any other problems aside from the stupid "batwing" one piece manifolds.

Sounds like you need a new shifter cable, alright. Try this: when shifting to N, turn off the motor first, if it then goes right into N without a problem, you need a cable.

Nice looking boat we have a restored 86 at our marina it almost looks new. I was looking at it yesterday while a mechanic was replacing the rebuilt OMC drive not sure what caused the problem, the bill was $2000. Enjoy your new boat and welcome to CSR.

Nice looking boat, and a nice job of cleaning her up. Now we can't wait to see photos of you and your crew using her.

I did some checking and found the transom shift cable is red, so it's the newer style. The ESA switch clicks when I move the lever in and out of gear (motor off).

Next thing I'll check is the same test with motor running to see if the ESA does anything.

That really is a pretty boat. I think she's been babied. And I love the old style moon hubcaps on the trailer. I have an identical set of those that need re-chromed. There is something so beautiful about the lines of vintage Sea Rays, they truly are timeless machines. And you really made out like a bandit on the water toys! What a nice way to get started in boating with lots of goodies! Thanks for the extra pic's...and welcome again to the club!
