Sorry for the long winded post, but this is my first time winterizing Fresh Water Cooled 8.1S. I have what is probably some very basic questions, but unfortunately these are the items that don’t come as common sense to me. I also searched the Forums, and didn’t find any concrete answers to these questions.
Below are the instructions for lay up per the Mercruiser Service Manual (#30). Hopefully after a few responses it will come as common sense. Thanks again all for the excellent information I have learned from this site. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

My questions are as follows
A- In order to go forward with # 3, wouldn’t I have to set up as under “Flushing Cooling System”
B- Under Flushing cooling system “using an adapter” would this be the same as placing the inlet hose into a bucket of pink antifreeze?
C- Under #6, Is this the same as 7-e? Im not sure if I have a fuel shut off on my engines, but if I unplug the harnesses will that have the same effect? Personnaly, im not to fond of unplugging any harnesses… Can I put the oil in the water seperator and make sure I only run the engine for a minute or two - knowing that all it ingested was the product in the filter?
D- Im assuming #10 wouldn’t have to be done since I filled the raw water side with pink antifreeze already
E- Lastly, is it safe to assume with a fresh water cooling system, that I don’t have to worry about the thermostat being opened… and that once I see pink stuff come out of my exhaust, that would mean anything that has potential of freezing can not?

1- Fill fuel tanks with fresh gas that does not contain alcohol and a sufficient amount of Quicksilver Gasoline Stabilizer
2- If boat is to be placed in storage with gas containing alcohol, fuel tanks should be drained as low as possible and Quicksilver Gasoline Stabilizer should be added
IMPORTANT – Before starting engine a water source must be attached to the seawater pickup pump.
Follow flushing attachments procedures in FLUSHING COOLING SYSTEM (see below)
3- Run engine sufficiently to bring it up to normal operating temperature, allowing gasoline stabilizer to run through engine. Shut off engine.
4- Change oil and filter
5- Flush cooling system. Refer to Flushing Cooling Sytem

Flushing Cooling System (Inboard)
-Remove inlet hose from sea water pickup pump
-Using an adapter, connect a hose from water tap to seawater pump inlet
-Partially open water tap (approximately ½ max capacity)
-Place remote control lever in Neutral, idle speed and start engine
-Operate Engine at idle speed in Neutral for 10 minutes or until discharge water is clear.
-Stop Engine
-Shut off water tap. Remove water hose and adaptor from pump inlet and reconnect water inlet hose to seawater pump.
-Tighten hose clamps securely.

6- Close the fuel shut-off valve, if equipped. If no fuel shut-off valve is present, a suitable method must be employed to STOP the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the Engine before proceeding.

7- Prepare fuel system for extended storage as follows;
a- Allow engine to cool down
b- Remove water separating filter
c- Pour out a small amount of fuel into a suitable container, then add approximately 2 ounces of Quicksilver 2-Cycle outboard oil in the water separating filter
d- Reinstall water separating filter
e- Disconnect harness connections from fuel pumpand fuel boost pump
f- Start and operate engine at idle speed until water separating fuel filter and fuel injection system are empty and engine stops
g- Remove and discard water separating filter
h- Install new water separating filter
i- Reconnect harness connections at both fuel pumps

8- Clean flame arrestor
9- Lubricarte all items in Lubrication section
10- Drain sewater section of cooling system
11-Test coolant to ensure it with withstand the lowest temperature expected during storage
12- Service batteries
13- Clean outside of Engine and repaint any areas required with Qucksilver Primer and spray paint. After paint has dried, spray quicksilver corrosion and rust preventive II or wipe down with Quicksilver storage seal or SAE 20W engine oil.
