I own a 1994 220 Overnighter Signature Select model Sea Ray with only 324 hours on it - pristine condition.
I use it for water skiing and just cruising on both the Ohio river and Lake Cumberland. Great boat for both these activities. I have come to this site to learn more about tuning the 7.4 L motor that is in this boat. I want to be sure I am getting all the power that is available. I do not want to install any "HOT ROD" modifications, just make sure the stock stuff is working 100%. Engine timing is my main search right now. No timing scale on the motor? How does one set the timing ????????

Welcome aboard.
Remember to update your signature with your boat info.

Look closely at the dampener. There should be a groove in it. Re-paint it white, or use a stick-on timing scale.

There is a groove in the harmonic balancer, no scale on the harmonic balancer. THere is NO SCALE on the block either, just the pointer.
SO, if I align the pointer to the groove, is that 0 degrees or 8 degrees BTDC? Did Merc do this so a person can only set it at 8 degrees advance?

That is the problem I am trying to solve.

Hope this makes sense. JD

Thanks for the link. I read that before I posted my question. It is basically the same problem as I have, just a different motor. I guess my solution is to find a scale that will go on the harmonic balancer.
