Hello everyone! I really enjoy reading everyobody's comments. My wife and I bought our first boat last year and have enjoyed boating ever since. My kids were ecstatic and we can't wait to go out again. -Ron

Hello Ron!

Welcome at Csr, nice boat that 260.

I recommend putting your boats info in your signature. It helps us to help you if you got a question or comment.

Have fun.

Peter

Thanks. I am updating my profile. -Ron

 Only one problem.. When somebody post an attachment (like you did now) in the post, our sig. disappears...

But sometimes it comes back, and you can always watch someone's profile to look at his info.

And you can add photo's and info in the virtual marina, than you get a link under your member name.

Succes

Peter

Does anybody use boat heaters? I have often wondered if this better so you can boat year round instead of winterizing. Would appreciate if somebody could direct me to a previous forum if this topic had already been discussed. Thanks.

Hi Ron and welcome to the board. I have a 260DA as well and we boat year round. You probably ought to read the "official 260DA thread" here. http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=560&start=0

As far as boat heaters go, some of us do use them. I have installed one in my boat and we are wet slipped and boat year round. If your'e in Nashville, your weather is probably similar to ours. Do you trailer or are you wet slipped?

Dave. Thanks. We have ours wet slipped as well and love the sound of being able to boat year round. I was hoping you can give me some pointers of what to do. I have inquired at a local SR dealer here in town and they offer the heater plus installation for about $1000. Did you install yours or did you have someone install it for you? Pardon my ignorance but I am assuming that you don't winterize your boat, right?

Yes......we boat year round http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1580

I installed a Boat Safe Heater in mine and yes I did it myself. The Boat Safe Heater is quite large though and you may want to consider the Xtreme Heater if size and space is a problem. I don't have a generator, so mine is mounted on the platform designed for the Genny. The biggest issue is wiring the heater. You can snake the cord through the panel under under the rear seat (located just behind the Captains chair) and then just plug into the outlet at the Helm or you can remove Cabin Panels and wire it directly to a seperate breaker in the power panel. I started out by plugging it into the outlet but then discovered that the refrigerator and outlets were on the same circuit and I couldn't leave the refrigerator on or it would trip the circuit breaker when the heater came on. So I then wired it directly into the power panel. It took me several hours to complete that job. There's about 3 or 4 hours labor involved. The heater and the breaker are probably going to cost you around $400-$450 so possibly the $1000 charge you were quoted may not be too far off base depending on the shops labor rate. If you decide to do it yourself, send me a PM and I can give you some pointers.

I also disconnect all the water lines feeding any of the faucets that would be exposed to freezing weather such as the cockpit faucet, the transom shower and the Faucet in the Lazarette. I disconnect them in the bilge, and then cap off the manifold. That way I can still use the rest of the fresh water system all winter long. Again, I can give you some pointers on that as well. Once the bilge heater is installed all you will have to do every year to keep the boat winterized is to drain the water lines I mentioned. Just leave your cabin heat pump running to heat the cabin and you are protected from any freezing (unless of course you loose power :smt021 ) and you can use the boat year round.

Dave,
Will have the heater installed. The local SR dealer only has Boat Safe Heaters and I will have them install this. They recommended however, that I do not de-winterize the water system. I think I will go with their recommendation for now since I won't be using the water system now anyway. Thanks for your input.
-Ron
