I just bought my boat a little over 2 weeks ago from a dealer in Maryland. I wired the money, got a reciept and drove away with it.

The boat is documented and I am waiting for paper work to be processed by the bank to release the lien and change my name as the new owner of the boat.

Today, my cell phone rings.. I answer. "Hello".
"Hi am I speaking to Vince?".
"Yes, Who's calling?"
"My name is Cindy and I work with the NJ Division of Taxation.. Do you have a minute to talk?
:wow: "Ahhh. Ahhh.. sure... what about?."
"We understand that you just purchased a boat"
"Ohh.. Ahhh... yeah.. I did. "
"Did you pay the sales tax yet?"
"Ohh.. Ahh. Ahh.. No.. :smt009.
:smt115 I was waiting to get the paper work from the bank before I went to Motor Vehicles. "

"Well you have to pay the sales tax within 20 days of the purchase".

"How did you find out that I purchased a boat?"

"The dealer reported it to us.."

Great, the lousy son of bitch (dealer) wont return my calls and no one in the office can give me a status on my paper work, but they found time to report me to NJ div of Taxation! :smt013.

So I started talking to Cindy and told her that I read this story about NJ Div of Taxation stopping trucks at weigh stations and impounding boats if the sales tax was not paid. I said I read something about a truck load of stingray boats being impounded.. Cindy said,.. "Yeah that was me.." "We do it all the time.. We even go to the marinas to look for new boats"

She gave me the total amount due and an address to mail it. I asked if keep the boat in a depressed area can I pay 3.5%? instead of 7%? She laughed and said sorry.. that rule doesnt apply to boats or motor vehicles... "Oh, well, You cant blame me for trying..."

So I ended the call, saying.. "I wish I could say it was nice speaking with you, but its not the type of call that I like getting" I'll get a check out right away.

So between the stock market today and this phone call, I about 20K lighter... Geezz I should have stayed in bed..

Typically you can file the documentation and within a couple of weeks receive a post card from the USCG with a case number. The USCG may take 12 or more weeks, and as much as I hate to defend. The dealer may be in a position where it is his A33 if he does not report. SOOOooooo

I know I just paid my taxes, and yes it sucks as well as the money on the investment side which is lost.

So some explain to me with all of this Christmas via the gov-mint again about Social Security going broke and it being better to privatize future Social Security and invest via Wall Street

It's a bird,it's a plane! No it is a big whooshing sound of the gov-mint and big business just a screwing the common hard working trying to strive to get ahead middle class folk again.

Hell my a33 is so sore I have to apply Preparation H with a six inch paint brush. I would be afraid to try and sit on a basketball it might disappear some place

Move to Rhode Island.

No boat sales tax.

No boat property tax.

Yes, they charge for registration on a documented boat, but it's just a "drop in the water" in boating terms.

NJ also has access to USCG documentation records. You must have listed your home port as being in New Jersey. I got a letter a number of years ago asking of the sales/use tax was paid on the my boat. They got the information from the USCG.

Isn't amazing how efficient our governments can be in the collection of money. If they were only half as efficient with the other things that they do we would be ahead of the game.

What's Cindy's phone number? I know a guy who keeps his boat in NJ, but has it documented in Florida. Since it's here all season, he should be paying sales tax on his 70' yacht.

Folks down here move their boats to Hampton/Portsmouth December 31 to avoid taxes. They bring them back when the season starts back up.

Here in VA you pay a max sales Tax on boats of $2K. And if you keep it in Prince William County there is no personal property tax. Though the dealers / marinas are well aware of it and tend to charge higher rates for slips. Capitalism at its best. My disclaimer - Check with your local authorities and tax advisor for final determination on tax laws in said area:lol:

Didn't you know that you had to pay sales tax?

I knew I had to pay.. I didnt realize that I only had 20 days. I figured I would register the boat in the spring and pay the sales tax at that point.

I was just suprised to get a phone call on my cell phone at work. Heck.. I wasnt even late yet... I was amused by it..

I guess its better than getting a letter 2 months from now, complete with interest and penalties.

Amazing how efficient they are in collecting sales taxes on boats. I wonder how much of that money will go back into dredging and maintaining buoys ... I'm sure it will straight into the General Fund and distributed to all the necessary social programs.. Its nice to pay over $8000 a year in Real Estate taxes and another 7% sales tax and 2% state income tax.. My civic duty..

On a different note, I took a ride on my boat last Tuesday.. Not many people on the water.. Within 1 mile of leaving my marina I passed 3 state police boats patroling the area... No shortage of police coverage in North Jersey.

This is a issue that has puzzled me for a long time. Why don't the citizens of NJ rise up and eliminate these taxes??

BTW in Alaska, I paid $21 for my registration for 3 years on my 300DB Sea Ray. No sales tax, no personal property tax.:smt038

Two reasons:
1) Too many people in Jersey are on the dole. That does not mean just welfare recipients, it also includes teachers and the rest of the idiots. You can't get any policy passed that cuts spending unless it somehow guarantees a benefit to the teachers union (New Jersey Extortion Association)
2) The politicians are corrupt and corruption is legal in Jersey. What gets pols thrown out in other states is fine and dandy here.

The idiots run the state. The rest of us are just taken along for the ride. But we stay 'cause it's still less taxing than new york.

Best regards,
Frank

I saved my butt about $13K by registering my boat in FL since I was moving here from MI.

In FL, you only pay sales tax on the difference in value of the boat you are trading in - in MI, you pay tax on the whole nut, regardless of your trade in. GAY!
